James Willan was my great-great-grandfather. I have him as the illegitimate son of Ann Willan (born abt 1792, died Kendal 1842). If you'd like more information, do let me know.
HI Tish
James is also my great great grandfather. Which of his children are you a decendeant of? I thought perhaps he was illegitimate and perhaps later orphaned - it has been a big brick wall I have hit and not been able to go any further. Any info you have would be gratefully received.
Kind regards
Tracy (nee Willan)
James' daughter Betsy (1868-1944), who married Thomas Mawson, was my great-grandmother. I assume you must be descended from one of her brothers? I have three noted: John Sheldermine Willan (1872-1954), James Shelmadine Willan (1877-1968?) and William Willan (1885 - ?) as well as four sisters.
James Willan himself was baptised on 19 July 1829 in Kendal, the son of Ann Willan (no father given) and I have him on every census from 1841 to 1891. Ann lived and died in Kendal and was buried there on 8 December 1842, but I haven't been able to pin down her birth or baptism with any degree of accuracy. I have too much information on the family to put in a 'reply' here. My e-mail address is tish_irwin AT yahoo.co.uk and if you contact me directly I can send it to you as an attachment.
Best wishes,
Patricia
