John Evans - Solid Brick Wall

Journal by yamahaow

John was may 2nd G Grandfather & Born abt 1849 Derbyshire. His Father was Francis Evans according to his Marriage Certificate of 1879 & was a sawyer. He Married my 2nd G Grandmother, Elizabeth Lifton abt 1853 Born Pembroke Dock, Wales, as a Soldier in Athlone Ireland. I have gone back to 1723 on Elizabeth's line.

The 1871 Census states John as a Foot Soldier, 95th Derbyshire Regiment, residing at Alverstoke, Hampshire, Regiment No. 1446. In 1875 I found a Military Gaol sentence of 168 days, Bedfordshire County & although no info to prove this is him I have added to his history. In 1876 his Regiment was posted to Pembrokeshire, Wales & where he met Elizabeth. In 1877 his Regiment was posted to Athlone Ireland & Elizabeth followed. They had a Son there, Frederick in 1878. In 1879 they had a Daughter Maud Mary in Co Kildare, Ireland. John & Elizabeth Married 1879 which is believed not to have been endorsed by the Army & they lived separately.

By 1881 they were living in Aldershot, Hampshire. John was in Barracks, Elizabeth & Children living separately.1881 John's Regiment left Aldershot for Chatham, Kent.I know his Regiment served in Egypt & that the 95th Reg. became the 2nd Battalion 1 July 1881. I found the Military Campaign & Awards Roll & Discharge record 1882 both state "Penal Servitude - 5 Years" His release would have been 1887 & that of hard labour,if he survived. I do reserve judgement against his sentence's, not knowing the facts or the circumstance's which led him. I have no idea where he served his sentence.

I have been unable to find Census for 1851 & 1861. John's Birth & Death year, still unknown. I did find on a Derbyshire History site where John was named as a Census stray of 1851 but no relevant details other than Born abt 1849 & no mention of Parents or siblings. John seems to have vanished as of 1882 along with their Son Frederick, only info for him is the 1881 Census & unable to find a Death record.

Elizabeth, as of the 1891 Census had moved to Birmingham with a new Husband Albert Shaw, her Daughter Maud Mary & their Son Christopher Shaw. Sadly no Frederick. I have been unable to find a Marriage for Elizabeth & Albert. Another Son, Albert was born 1891.

Any advice, ideas or suggestions in an attempt to find the missing piece's shall be gratefully received. I am resigned that I may never find the missing info but decided to try one last time in the hope of any help. Thank you to anyone who takes the time read this.
