GEMPTON - Brixham Devon England

Journal by Tiffaney

My direct ancestor Elizabeth GEMPTON sometimes spelt GAMPTON, was born 1818 Brixham Devon - her father was John Gempton also of Brixham.
Would like to go further back with this line.

Elizabeth married William Henry MOORE also born 1818 but in Seaton & Beer, Devon.

The couple meet in St. Peter Port Guernsey, married & lived there for eight years raising their first four children before sailing to Lyttleton New Zealand on 'Sir George Polloch' in 1851. They later settled in Okain's Bay, Banks Peninsula where more children were born including my g.grandfather Charles Samuel Frederick Moore being the youngest who later married Mary Ann MASON 01 March 1881

Any connections or more details would be much appreciated.

Can also share more information on above.

Thankyou,

Dianne NZ

You can access transcripts of the Brixham parish registers on line via Genuki and via the Brixham Heritage Museum site, perhaps that might give you more?
Good luck...........

p.s.
You may be interested to know there is a GALMPTON and a GALMPTON WARBOROUGH close to Brixham, and there is another GALMPTON up the coast to the west of Salcombe, which more or less mirrors each side of the headland.

Thanks you also for your knowledge re GALMPTON and a GALMPTON Warborough nr. Brixham..& also athe other GALMPTON you mention to the west of Salcombe.

Was paid up & booked to go back to UK in 2010 especially to visit Devon & Guernsey but after my husbands sudden passing and later the earthquakes in ChCh..my trip has been put on hold. Hope to be back in 2012.

You are great with all your help.

Thankyou so much.

Gosh, very sorry to know you have had such a rough time.
We have family involved in restoring order in ChCh.

I found this while wondering about the derivation of "Galmpton":

My family name is Gempton and I was born in Brixham in 1950. Galmpton is a village not far from Brixham and it is thought that he origins of the name came from there. I have history going back to 1630 and will give you what you need to know.
