Journal by shiralee

The funeral took place on Thursday of Mr Herbert BROOM, whose death occurred on Sunday evening after a brief illness. A large number of relatives were present, also employees of Messrs White & Co.?s Pontymister, steel foundry, of which deceased was an employee.
A short service was held at the house, previously the funeral leaving for Cefn Chapel, at which another service took place, both being conducted by the Rev S Jones, Moriah Chapel, Risca.
The service at the grave side was taken by the Rev. F.H.Southall, Newport, who, in the course of his remarks, sympathetically referred to the widow & child of the deceased, also the aged parents of both deceased & his widow.
The deceased was held in deepest respect throughout the district, where he was well known, & signs of mourning were in evidence along the route from Risca to Bethseda Chapel. The coffin, of polished elm, was laden with wreaths, including one from deceased?s fellow workmen, his
sorrowing father & mother, his brothers & sisters, Mr & Mrs Johnson & family, father & mother in law, & many others.

The undated newspaper clipping this is copied from was in possession of Grace Millicent STEWART (nee BROOM), grandneice, who was born & died in NZ>

Both SilverVixen and janilye,
I am so very grateful to be able to understand this relationship. My late mother-in-law had been without her parents for a long time, & when she gave me this obituary, with 2 others (Worthy & Margaret BROOM), she did not have the connections. Her grandfather (David BROOM) died after only a few years in NZ, & direct family information has been long lost. Thank you for your wonderful input via Family Circles. I am happy to supply photos & any history of NZ descendants of David BROOM, is asked.

for anyone interested in the locations (as I was)

Pontymister is a small village in Caerphilly county borough in Wales.

from The development of Pontymister ... The Pontymister ironworks began in 1801. First it was connected by a tramroad to the canal, but when the tramroad from Newport to Sirhowy was opened in 1805, the ironworks tramroad was connected with the Sirhowy tramroad

According to Herbert's gravestone in Bethesda Chapel, Rogerstone, his wife was Emily Broom. Having searched FreeBMD's database he did marry a Henderson and also an Emily, in September 1903. I've searched for an Emily Henderson and Margaret Henderson, but it doesn't find a match. Perhaps she was Margaret Emily. Janilye, do you have atranscript of the marriage?

Silvervixen, than you very much for this. I am very glad I posted the obituaries I had, as I have been able to be in touch with a direct relative of my husband. Mike Watkins has a site to which I am now affiliated.
I just hope a direct descendant of Herbert is glad to get his obituary.
Keep going with your good work. ;-) !
