Looking for information on Eliza Jane Solomon and Thomas Watts Trudgeon who emmigrated to New Zealand in 1873

Query by Deborah62

I am a descendant of the eight child of Eliza Jane Solomon and Thomas Watts Trudgeon. My great grandmother Eliza Jane. She was one of 16 siblings, two of which died prior to their first birthday. I believe my great grandmother left New Zealand at some time in the 1920's but am vague as to details. Also I am very interested in what became of Eliza after she separated from Thomas and even more interested in what happened to Thomas as the only information I had (which I am not sure if it is true) is that he died in an institution in 1926 in Wanganui. Any information or connections to our wider family would be so appreciated.

Crawford. I wondered what the words "private internment" mean. Was/is the Wanganui hospital a general hospital? Any way of finding death certificates that give information into the cause of death. I should imagine there is a way to search online. I am a newcomer to family history research.

Dear Crawford. I should imagine private internment refers to the burial. I managed to find a record on line and that states Thomas was buried on 19 May at Aramoho Cemetary in Wanganui. So that may answer my question. Warn wishes, Deborah

Hi there Deborah62,
The best way to find out death details/cause of death is to buy the Death Cert from BDM online- they will email you a digital copy, usually within 2 or 3 days.
https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz.

The death certificate will also give you the name of the informant - the person who is supplying the details about the deceased. The informant is often, but not always a family member. If it is not a family member then it may be someone from the institution and they often don't know a lot.
I'm not too sure what 'private interment' means exactly, but I presume it means there would be a service of some sort only for family members or those who are invited.
Hope this helps.
Regards
R.

Thank you very much for that information. I am very curious as to the fate of Thomas after Eliza left him, that the death notice speaks of his being loved by his daughter Amelia shows they must surely have been close but I believe Thomas was abusive and had a serious drinking problem. So I am very interested to try to find out what happened to him, though I know this is going to be difficult.Thank you again for the information you gave me. Kind wishes Deborah
