MARRIAGE.

Groom: Thomas SEDGMAN.
Birth place: Given as Brunswick.

Bride: Elizabeth Mary TICEHURST.
Birth place: Given as London.

Year married: 1878.
Place: Victoria.
Ref: Registry of Marriages, Victoria. Reg. #2676.

Just confirming the marriage for Thomas and Elizabeth.

As far as I know they only had four children in Victoria.

1. Thomas Michael, born 1879 Collingwood, Victoria Reg. #8236.

No birth located for Henry Charles SEDGMAN in Victoria for that period. His birth may have been recorded under a different spelling and will do a few more record searches tomorrow.

Are you sure he was born in Victoria?

Look for Charles Sedgman Tonkin.

The Argus Tue 7 Jan 1890
NEGLECTED CHILDREN.

At the Richmond Court yesterday morning four children named Minnie,Harriett,Charles, and James Sedgman, the eldest aged nine,
and the youngest four months, were brought up as neglected.
The evidence disclosed a deplorable state of affairs.
The father had deserted them 12 months ago, and the mother
by dint of hard work managed to support them until last week, when she gave way to drink. She went to the police station, and asked to be taken in charge, as she was afraid of committing suicide. Her conduct
was so eccentric that the sergeant, thinking she was not fit to take care of herself, took her in custody, and she was remanded to the gaol for medical treatment Hence the proceedings, A neighbour offered to take care
of the children until Wednesday, when the mother would appear before the Court, and the Bench handed them over to him.

Charles Henry Sedgman was 83 when he died on the 3 August 1972 and had been living in Maryborough, Queensland.

I won't go any further into this family you probably know all about it.

I should mention that Gertrude GROOM died less than 3 weeks before her husband, on the 17 July 1972, and she was age 73.

Minniesedgman may be able to tell us if this is the death of the Henry Charles (or Charles Henry) SEDGMAN in question.

Mother named as Elizabeth HILLHURST.
Maybe this is an error and should be TICEHURST.

Just going back to the "Argus" of 1890 it states there were four (4) neglected children named Minnie, Harriet, Charles and James.
There is no mention of Thomas Michael born in 1879, and there is no record of his death.

I can only account for three of the children to date.

James Hunter SEDGMAN died 1891 in Collingwood, Victoria.
Age: 01 year.
Reg. #1178.

Minnie Jane SEDGMAN married Percy KERRY 1907.
Reg. #6776.
Died 1943 Oakleigh, Victoria.
Age: 61 years.
Reg. #4083.

Harriet Emily SEDGMAN married Charles Robert Victor DAVIES 1913.
Reg. #10541.
Died: 1963 Footscray, Victoria.
Age: 79 years.
Reg. #22704.

So what happened to Thomas Michael SEDGMAN?
Was his name changed to Charles?

Will keep looking.

To my mind Thomas Michael born 1879, would have been 11 in January 1900 when they were in court. 11 wasn't mentioned.
The eldest they mention was 9 which was Minnie, then Harriet born 1883 age 7 then James born 1889 and probably the youngest at 4 months so Charles Henry born 1888 (and not registered) was a toddler of not quite 2.
So that makes me think Thomas Michael named after his father and grandfather, either left with the father or died.

by janilye on 2017-04-30 10:18:24

So I think he left home and this below is Thomas Michael
Death registration
number 13858

Given names: Thos
Father's name: Sedgman Thos
Mother's name: Unknown

I picked up the same death for this Thomas SEDGMAN who died in 1936 at Inglewood, Victoria, aged 57 years.

Thomas was buried at the Inglewood Cemetery, Victoria.
Section: Church of England.
Grave number: 1438.
Headstone gives date of death as 02 March 1936.
Age: 56 years.

Note.
Headstones often gave wrong death dates and ages at death.

by tonkin on 2017-04-30 13:45:16

Probate for Thomas Sedgman (1903) gives his date of death as 13 July 1901.

This appears to be his death.

Name: Thomas SEDGMAN.
Died: 1901 Melbourne South, Victoria.
Age: 50 years.
Father: Michael SEDGMAN.
Mother: Mary HILL.
Ref: Registry of Deaths, Victoria. Reg. #10540.

Michael SEDGMAN and Mary HILL were married in Cornwall in 1831.
They had nine children in Cornwall between 1831 and 1848. Their first child, Richard, was born 1831 in Cornwall and died 1886 in Hawthorn, Victoria, aged 55 years.

Records indicate Michael and Mary had other children born in Victoria but I'm unable to locate the birth records.

So do the papers; he was in his 57th year.

If anybody in here belongs to Ancestry maybe they could look up the Electoral Rolls for 1934 and 1936
for Thomas Sedgman
RESIDENCE: city, Bendigo, Victoria, Australia
and tell us his address and occupation and if there was anyone else in the house with him.
The same for Elizabeth Sedgman in 1903
RESIDENCE: city, Northern Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

I am the granddaughter of Minnie Jane Sedgman. My father was Eric Edmund Kerry who was an only child of Minnie and Percy and died when I was 9 in 1958. We lived at Creswick, Victoria.
I do not know anything of the family history of Sedgman although as a young child I do remember visiting Aunty Harriet in Creswick, Victoria. This would have been prior to 1961 or thereabouts.
