The death took place at Picton this week of Mr John A. R. Greensill, of 'Brooklyn' Picton, at the age of 83. Captain Baillie, M.L.C. Some time later Mr Greensill took up Arapawa Island, in the Sounds. He represented the Sounds on the old Provincial Council and was one of the very few survivors of that body. He was for a time Mayor of Picton and was instrumental in obtaining for the borough the oldest lay reader in the Dominion of the Church of England, having served in that capacity for 61 years. * It is with regret that we have to announce the death last night of Mrs J. A. R. Greensill, of Picton, youngest daughter of Mr Justice Conolly, at the early age of 29. The deceased lady had been a sufferer for some time, but it was only after her confinement about a fortnight ago that the symptoms of a pulmonary disease became apparent, and from that time the gradual weakening that has been apparent left but little hope of her recovery, and her death last night was therefore hardly a surprise. She leaves behind many relatives and friends to mourn her decease, and two little ones to comfort the bereaved. His Honor Mr Justice Conolly is expected over from Wellington where the Court of Appeal is to sit on Monday, but the date of the funeral will not be fixed till his arrival

Mrs Greensill had been ailing for a few days, though her indisposition was not thought to be a dangerous character. W. Downes, who held various appointments under the Provincial Government in the old days, when the seat of government was at Picton. * The youngest of seven surviving children of John Abraham Roberts Greensill & Selina Rebecca Downes, Nina Agantha Rosamond Greensill, was a teacher & community leader. She married 16 Nov 1904 in Picton, to Thomas Robert Barrer, an engineer. The couple lived in Wellington for the next few years before moving to Wairarapa, where Thomas became a sheepfarmer at Te Wharau. They also had a house in Masterton and spent the rest of their lives in the Wairarapa. In 1959 she was made an MBE for her services to education. Widowed in November 1951, she died in Masterton on 17 September 1965, survived by three sons and a daughter
* John Abraham Roberts Greensill was the Mayor of Picton. In 1905 he was occupying the chair for the fourth time. He named his Picton home on Waikawa Road, "Brooklyn" (demolished in 1992). They received many visitors for afternoon tea or to play tennis, among them was Kathleen Beauchamp who later changed her name to Katherine Mansfield (the writer). Katherine would sometimes go with John to the little Koromiko church, St John in the Wilderness, on a Sunday (now a Heritage Place). Lottie Frame (nee Godfrey), mother of Janet Frame, the writer of 'An Angel At My Table', was a housemaid to the Picton Beauchamps .. (some exerts from Katherine Mansfield Walk)
