Henry "Harry" REES

Query by Hayden_7337

Hi and thanks for any clues.

I am trying to trace the death of my grandfather Henry "Harry" Rees, sometimes seen as William Henry Rees.

My grandmother, Lucy Ann Rees (Furniss) returned to Melbourne Australia in Nov 1911 with her children, daughter Catherine Frances Bunn (Jacob Bunn father, decd), Clarence Victor Rees (my father), Laurence Robert Rees, Dorothy Irene and Luree Barbara. They came on the SS Ballarat and docs stated that she was married. Her husband was not on board with the family.

The 1911 UK census (April 2 ?) showed her being 40 (in fact she was 42) and that she was married, was head of house, but, (Husband Away). It also shows her being married for 21 years present marriage, but it was only 15 years to William Henry Harry Rees, who is "away". She had married Jacob Bunn in 1890 in Queensland Australia, who died 4 months later. Lucy returned to UK to give birth to Catherine 5 months after husbands death.

We thought William may have died around that time, as he did not come to Australia, but a couple of death certs were in vain. We thought he died in Jan 1918 in East Cardiff, but the cert shows an L Rees (son) of 207 Albany, Cardiff, was in attendance. The only son Laurence was in Australia. The 1911 death cert (our first choice), shows a B Rees (brother) of Caemawr present at death. We are not aware of this brother nor his occupation of platelayer!

Lucy died in 1928, Catherine in 1975, Victor in 1960, Laurence in 1963, Dorothy in 1919 and Luree in 2003.

Maybe it was usual to rename yourself, but Lucy Ann Furniss used her birth name until married in Australia in 1890, thus Lucy Ann Bunn, but in the 1891 Census she is Lucy Ann Bunn 22, and daughter is Catherine F Bunn 2/12 years. In 1901 Catherine is a Rees, as is Lucy.

William Henry "Harry" Rees, is actually shown as Henry James Rees on my fathers birth cert in 1897, but J does appear on 1871 and 1881 census, but William appears in most other cases ??? Birth records only show him as Henry Rees. The 1871 census actually shows a brother called William (5 years older).
