Henry Butler Dowie was a Parkhurst Boy. He was, in fact, one of the original 102 juvenile offenders received at Parkhurst Prison when the institution was officially opened on that date. His Gaoler?s Report commented that his conduct had been good, that he was single and could both read and write. Henry Butler Dowie was discharged from Parkhurst Prison on 31/05/1842 in readiness for transportation to New Zealand. He was employed as an apprentice surveyor in Auckland on his arrival. He stole money from his employer and was transported to Van Dieman's land on the John Pirie. On 27/06/1848 he was granted his Ticket of Leave. Henry Butler Dowie became a respected member of the community, witnessed particularly in 1866 by his election and appointment as a local councillor in the newly-established municipality of Evandale (near Launceston). His wife, Barbara, died on the 24/11/1868, aged 44 (no cause specified). He was to marry for a second time on the 23/01/1873, his bride 27 year old Sarah Ann Bryan, a local Evandale girl. There were 7 children born to Barbara and 3 to Sarah. Henry Butler Dowie was my great great grandfather.
