Wow, a pirate. That's really cool. Do you have any family stories about him? Or even better, any treasure maps? ;)
reply to scott j .yes it is kind of cool to have a pirate as an ancestor.although from what i heard he liked to be called a privateer .sorry but i have no treasure maps,although i do have a map of houston that was purchased at wal-mart(ha!ha!).i really wish hed left some spanish dabloons for us but no such luck.as for family stories,the only ones i have are my grandmas of what it was like when she was growing up.they did not have t.vs,or a fridge.milk was still delivered to the front door as was ice in big blocks if you could afford it. anyway thats all for now.
any chance your privateer ancestor came to hawaii
and settled....about 1850? aloha, seeti

i know at one time he spent some time in the carribean islands healing wounds,but im not sure exactly where. he never settled ther as far as i know. he went from scotland, to ireland, to baltimore maryland, to new orleans, then finally setttled on galveston island in texas.
this j.c. was born in 1826 in londonderry, scotland....signed on a
ship at age 13 to ny to stay with a brother....signed on with
a ship out of new bedford....spent 2 years in tahiti....hopped a
ship to hawaii and landed on maui in 1850.....married a part-hawaiian girl, hannah barla or butler, and had 3 children by her;
he died in the occidental hotel, sf, april 1900. aloha
i dont think this is the same guy. my jc was born in londonderry, ireland in1786 move to baltomore with parents in 1790. fought in the war of 1812.became first mate for jean lafitte sometime after the war. settled in galveston around 1830 married his wife in1831, though they had been together before this the previous marraige was not seen as legal in the eyes of god cause it was performed by native americans when they lived in sabine pass ,tx. he died may 27.1856 in galveston tx.
i forgot to say that he had a brother who i beleive was named jim cambell, which is a short name for james
He was Scottish, his parents left Scotland for Ireland then to US.
