Alexander SMART was born 4 December 1835 in Kinard Castle, Farnell Parish, Angus, Scotland to William and Jane Johnston(e)SMART. He was christened 27 December 1835 in Ireland. Living siblings listed in his father's obit (8 total) James Johnston, William, John Johnston and Alexander. William and Jane's 3 sons, Walter, Frances Kerr, and Charles, and dtr Agnes B. Donald not listed.

William was born 14 April 1800 in Brechin, Angus, Scotland. As a gardener/forester for the Carnegie estate, he thought there were better opportunities in the New World. In 1856 he sailed on the "Caroline", registered in Rockland, ME, from Liverpool to Boston and established a home in Andover, Essex, MA. He was a member of the Old Free Church of Scotland and was a man whose record for integrity and fidelity gained him uniform confidence and esteem. William died in Andover, 6 January 1878. No bio info for Jane, born 13 May 1798 in Scotland (no location) and died in Andover 1 September 1855. They are buried in Andover's South Church Cemetery.

Alexander was educated in Edinburgh, Scotland, and throughout his life has manifested many of the sterling traits of his race. He began learning the machinist trade while young and worked at this for 2 years. He worked for the North British Railroad for 2 years as engineer, in the same capacity between Edinburgh and Berwick.

In 1857, he came to the US at 21 years-of-age and settled in Boston as superintendent for Stone & Smart, where his brother (no name) was a junior partner. Alex managed their machine shop until 1859, when he made his way to Davenport, Scott, IA and engaged in farming in the vicinity of the city for about 2 years.

On 15 December 1859 in Chicago, Cook, IL, Alex married Miss Lucy A. Sanger, born in Danvers, Essex, MA, dtr of the late George W. SANGER of Watertown, Middlesex, MA (no mother listed). George was a native of MA and conducted an extensive and successful business as a contractor and builder. He died when Lucy was a child (no date) Lucy SANGER SMART died 26 August 1871 of typhoid and is buried in Davenport's Oakdale Cemetery. Interment date was 15 June 1872 as the body was moved from Dallas County, IA.

Alexander moved to Whiteside County, IL, two years later and again engaged in farming for 5 years. In 1866, he went to Malcolm, Poweshiek, IA and was an agent for the Mississippi and Missouri Railroad which sold its line to the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad Company. Mr. Smart built a grain elevator and engaged in business until 1868 in Malcolm when he moved to DeSoto, Dallas, IA, terminus for the CRI&P. The line was extended to Stuart, Adair, IA, and Alex took charge of the station and continued as agent until 1887. While in Stuart, Alexander served on the school board and was interested in progressive public measures tending to promote community welfare along business and intellectual lines.

Alexander married Emily H. ELDRIDGE PARKER 17 October 1872 in Davenport, Scott, IA. She was born (no date) in 1836 in Gloucester County, NJ, dtr of John M. (MULLEN?) and Mary Ann ADAMS ELDRIDGE. Emily had 2 dtrs in Davenport with husband Dr. Wallace William PARKER who died in a railroad accident on 8 August 1868 in Ames, Story, IA: Ida Helen born 1857 (no date), married Willard B. Conger, and Anna H. born 1860 who died of typhoid on 3 September 1869.

In 1887, Alexander was employed by the Southern Pacific Railroad.

On 15 May 1888, he came to Perry, Dallas, IA and was the agent for the CRIP until 1891, living in Guthrie Center, Guthrie, IA. He then went to Des Moines, Polk, IA and bought out the Blue Line Transfer Co. He carried on business until 1894 when he sold out and organized the Bazalt (basalt?) Hardwall Plaster Co., until 1899 when he again sold out and went to Guthrie Center. Emily ELDRIDGE PARKER SMART died in Guthrie Center on 24 July 1899. He took charge of the CRIP station. The Minneapolis and St. Louis RR purchased this line and Alexander was the agent until his retirement.

He died in Zenith, King, WA on 9 January 1935 where he was living in the Masonic home. He celebrated his 99th birthday there, where he arose at 4:30 each day. His long white beard and cheery smile were familiar to everyone. He joined the Masons in 1869 and was a Shriner since 1906. He was honored as being the oldest Shriner in the world in 1935 at 99 years old. No burial info as of Oct 2014.

Charles was born 21 Mar 1943 in Howell, Michigan, son of Charles and Hilda ROEN ASHER.

Charles was elected Governor of Badger Boys State in high school, a member of President Kennedy's Committee on Youth and Children, and was licensed at age 16 by the Methodist Church bishop to be a lay reader.

In 1964 he graduated from the University of Wisconsin/Madison and received his Doctor of Ministry degree from Andover Newton Theological Seminary in Andover, Massachusetts. He earned his MA from the Union Theological Seminary. He studied psychology in the New School of Social Research in New York City.

On 22 Jan 1966, he married Kay Medori UYEHARA in New York, New York. Kay was born 11 Apr 1943 in Honolulu, Hawaii, dtr of Dr. Ukuo and Dorothy TESHIMA UYEHARA. She graduated form the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California and is a physical therapist. They were divorced.

Kay Midori ASHER married James B. BUHRENDORF in Aug 1978 (no date). They live in Massachusetts. No BMD on Jim / James?

Charles married Tracey NICHOLAS on 1 Mar 1982 in Dallas, Texas and was divorced in 1984 (no date).

Charles is a teacher and private psychoanalyst with the C. G. JUNG Institute in Houston, Texas where he also does interim preaching for the Methodist Church.

Charles William was born 23 June 1889 in Missouri (no location), middle child of Lewis Micajah and Agnes NOBLE. He returned to Davenport with mother Agnes who filed for divorce for Lewis' dissertion. Charles attended public schools until age 17 when he began working for the Arthur J. WILEY Grocery Store as a clerk.

Charles married Martha NITSCHMANN on 3 June 1913 in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha, South Dakota. Martha was the dtr of Herman August and Wilhelmina GREUSCH NITSCHMANN, born 15 Apr 1893 in Elgin, Kane, Illinois. At age 20, Martha went to Sioux Falls to work at the Sherman Hotel where she met Charles ASHER.

The ASHERS returned to Davenport where Charles worked as a waiter in the Hill Cafe until 1915. They moved to Michigan where they owned restaurants in several cities in the Detroit area.

During WWII, Charles worked for the Ford Motor Company in the bomber plant at Ypsilanti, Michigan in the executive dining room. After the war, he transferred to the Ford Rouge Plant executive dining room at Dearborn, Michigan where he was employed until his retirement in 1954.

The ASHERS also owned a small hotel in Wayne, Michigan for several years. They were members of the Methodist church. They had 6 children.

Charles died 1 Nov 1958 in Green Bay, Brown, Wisconsin while watching his grandson play football. Martha died 12 May 1975 at Garden City, Wayne, Michigan. They are buried in Roseland Park Cemetery at Berkley, Oakland, Michigan.

Charles was born 2 Jun 1918 in Washington, D. C. son of Charles and Martha NITSCHMANN/NITCHMAN ASHER. In 1941 he graduated from Michigan State University at East Lansing, Michigan with a major in physical education. During college, Charles played football and was a fullback on the MSU team in the first Orange Bowl game, played in Miami, Florida.

On 24 Aug 1940, Charles married Hilda Marie ROEN in Charlevoix, Michigan where Hilda was born 10 Jan 1919 to Capt. John J. and Anna Marie SKYE ROEN. Capt. ROEN was born in Norway and was the owner of a marine salvage company and fleet of ships which transported construction materials on the Great Lakes.

After their marriage, and WWII, he coached at the high school level. During WWII, he was a Lieutenant in the Navy for 4 yers, serving in the South Pacific and the US.

The family lived in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin where Charles was the owner/operator of a marine construction company and the Chas. Asher & Sons real estate company. They made their home in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and summer in Sturgeon Bay. He died in Sturgeon Bay 18 Jan 1993. (SSDI).

John lives at Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin whe he is president of the ROEN Salvage Co. founded by his grandfather, Capt John ROEN. He is a member of the Methodist Church and is not married.
4. Stephen Michael born 4 May 1954 in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. For 3 years while attending teh University of Arizona at Tucson, Stephen traveled and performed with the "Up With People" organization, in Europe, South America, and throughout the US. He performed with teh group before the King of Spain.
On 23 Aug 1986, Stephen married Rachel Joy KUEHL in Sturgeon Bay. Rachel was born 26 Feb 1951 in Marshfield, Wisconsin, dtr of Dietrich and Hulda POTRATZ KUEHL. Asher & Sons, a real estate company in Sturgeon Bay where they live. The Ashers are members of the Methodist Church.

Daniel was born 22 Feb 1947 in Ypsilanti, Washtenaw, Michigan, son of Howard and Rebecca RUSTIN ASHER. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War and in Thailand, Germany and Korea before his 1978 discharge.

He married Soomboon "Penny" WANGKUMJUN on 26 Feb 1969 in Korat, Thailand. She was born 1 Nov 1941 in Salangpan, Thailand. They were divorced 4 Feb 1977.

In 1978 (no date), he married XXX CHIN (no first name)in Korea. There was a child, Jason CHIN ASHER born 13 Jan 1979 in Korea.

Since his discharge, Dan worked as a chef in San Francisco, California.

Gertrude May ASHER was born 26 Mar 1887 in Davenport, Scott, Iowa. She attended Davenport public schools and worked as a bookkeeper for the Arthur J. WILEY grocery store on Brady St.

She married Frederick Bird COX of East Moline, Rock Island, Illinois on 25 Nov 1910 in her mother and stepfather's home on East Locust St. in Davenport. (Agnes divorced Lewis for dissertion and married Fayette M. JONES). Frederick was born 26 Nov 1883 in Jasper County, Iowa (no city) son of Jason J. and Hattie ARCULARINS COX. He worked on the railroad. After their marriage, they lived in Moline, Rock Island, Illinois.

She and Frederick seperated in about 1922 (no date). Gertie worked as a clerk or salesperson for various Davenport and Rock Island businesses.

She died from cancer 2 Oct 1932 in Davenport and is buried in Oakdale Memorial Gardens in Davenport. She was a member of St. John's Methodist Church. They had 2 sons:

Leroy was born 22 Nov 1921 in Detroit, Michigan, son of Charles and Martha NITCHMAN/NITSCHMANN ASHER. He graduated from Cooley High School in Detroit and from the Henry Ford Apprentice School in 1943 as a journeyman toolmaker. During WWII, he was deferred from the armed service to work in the Ford Bomber Plant in Ypsilanti, Michigan. He has worked in several divisions and worked in the Automotive Assembly Division in Allen Park, Michigan. (1986)

On 3 Jun 1947, LeRoy married Willadene in her parents' home in Orland, Michigan. She as born 20 May 1921 in Orland, dtr of Harry Gearhart and Ellen Alice STUCK STOLDT. She graduated form Orland High School and Tri-State College in Angola, Michigan in 1942 where she took a secretarial course. She worked for the Ford Motor Company in teh file room of the Administration Building in Detroit and often saw Henry Ford. In 1950, she was transferred to the office of the General Councel to become law librarian until her retirement in 1957.

They lived in Garden City, Michigan and were members of the Methodist Church. They had 2 sons:

1. LeRoy Louis Jr. born 27 Sept 1957 in Dearborn, Michigan. He graduated from high school there and received his BS from the University of Michigan in Dearborn majoring in political science. On 13 Aug 1978, he married Virginia Margaret OWSLEY, in St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Garden City. Virginia was born May 1959 (no date). He had 1 son Jeffrey ARNETT. Steven graduated in 1985 from Black Hawk Jr. College in Moline, Illinois with a degree (AA or certificate?)in electronics. He is employed by the R.C. Stoner Co. of Davenport, and they live in Hampton, Illinois.
