Bugly on Family Tree Circles

I am looking for my g.g.grandfather Henry COWAN, who was born in Scotland about 1817. Earliest known information of Henry was at his marriage on 22 November 1848 to Catherine LOCHEAD in Auckland, New Zealand at St Pauls Anglican Church. Henry died in Auckland on 12 August 1873 aged 56.

Henry was described on the marriage register as a batchelor, and his son years later stated that his father "had seen service in the navy". Henry was variously a sawyer (timber feller/saw miller), brickmaker, and farmer at Mahurangi in North Auckland.

It is unknown whether Henry came directly to New Zealand, or whether he arrived via Australia. The family has always asserted that the COWAN family were part of the Macdougall clan.

Henry's wife Catherine LOCHEAD was born in Scotland, her family coming from the Paisley and Renfrewshire area. It is unknown whether the COWAN and LOCHEAD families were acquainted prior to their emigration to New Zealand. The LOCHEAD family were among the first settlers to Auckland, sailing out of Greenock, Scotland on the Duchess of Argyle in 1842.
