Captain Nicholas Garrison, Moravian convert, and his family

Capt. Nicholas GARRISON, is a Moravian convert. One of his ship's name was the Irene. His son, Benjamin Garrison did a drawing of the Irene.

The Moravians in the United States and elsewhere:

The church which became established following the renewal during the 18th Century is now known in English speaking countries as the 'Moravian Church' (as in Great Britain and Ireland, Canada, Nicaragua, the United States, Jamaica, and several nations in the eastern West Indies). In the Czech Republic they are known as Jednota Bratrsk?, and in the Netherlands as the Evangelische Broedergemeente and perhaps more commonly as 'Herrnhuters', from the main Moravian settlement at Herrnhut in Germany; they are similarly named in Sweden. Zeist is the historical centre for the Dutch Brethren. The Moravians who came to the United States in the early 1700s were immigrants originating from settlements on the estates of Count Nicolas Ludwig von Zinzendorf in present-day Saxony in Germany. =============================================

I just reread Lambert Garrison, the elder's Will below. No Mary or John is listed on the will. The only child not listed on the 1706 census that is mentioned in the will is Elizabeth who was born after the census. However listed on the 1706 Census there is a listing for a young family: David with parents, Dunkan and Mary Olyphant. Perhaps, (1) Mary's last name was not Garrison and John was a brother-in-law because he married Dunkan's sister, (2) Mary was a brother's daughter and John was his son (but John and their father were not residing there on the 1706 census), or (3) Mary (and John) lost contact with her family. So Mary's line has been moved to here:

A number of the descendants of Jedediah GARRISON (c1752-1830) claim that he was the son of Christopher GARRISON of Staten Island, NY. Christopher was son of Isaac, son of Lambert, Sr. A number of genealogists have searched diligently and no one can prove Christopher ever left the North, even though "they" claim he reared his family in Duplin Co, NC. There is not one early record for any Christopher GARRISON in the whole state of North Carolina.

Page 68.--In the name of God, Amen. "I, ST. GEORGE TALBOT, of the Town and Port of Dover, in Great Britain, now an inhabitant of New York. (I was born ye 25 day of July, 1662, now ye 5th of August) now being perfect health." "First, for my Soul I do Recommend it to Him whose due it is by a three fold right: As my Creator who enfused it into me, My Redeemer who freely ransomed it with his Dearest Blood, My Sanctifier who assists me in greatest Assaults & Temptations." "My Body to be enterred in a plain pitch pine or oak coffin, of its natural Color." "I did in the twenty-first year of my life devote myself to Celibacy, of the which I never repented; notwithstanding I have had great Temptations, by offers to advance my temporal estate by marrying. For my refusing I have suffered great affronts, and scandalous, base, vile, and false Reports. I do declare that I never knew any Woman carnally, as men know their wives." "I do now every day expect with Joy to appear before, and behold the great Jehova, Elohim. I allways loved and feared Him." "I leave to Mrs. Rachel Gould, my faithful housekeeper, the following sums yearly, to be paid by the Parrishes to which I have given sums of money, viz., From Rye, ?18; From North Castle and Bedford, ?21; From Stamford, ?24; From Derby, ?3 10s.; From Fairfield, ?7," "Provided the said Rachel Gould remain and continue single, chaste, and virtuous, as she hath done for more than twenty-seven years past, since I became first acquainted with her." "I sincerely desire that before her death she shall settle what she has left, or give it to such pious charitable use as I have done, To the great Honor of Almighty God, the benefit of the Public, To my own satisfaction, and the good of her own Soul." "I have given for the promotion of Religion, to the Parrish of Rye, ?600, which I delivered in Trust to Rev. Mr. James Wetmore, deceased, on February 24, 1759, for which he and his son Timothy gave a Bond, on April 11, 1759, and he offered to give me a mortgage on his land, at Rye, for security. He said the land would bring him 16 or ?1,800, but since land arose to a greater price. But I, knowing his veracity, refused it. But since his death I have found a great miscarriage by his son's trading, and their negligence in not paying the interest, the ?600 is forfeited. Not only that, but they have sold a part of their lands, being intimidated by insolent Parishioners, and also an old house joining to their Old Parsonage, to the amount of more than ?450, which they delivered to the late incumbent, Rev. Mr. Rinderson. They have still lands enough for a farm for themselves and their mother, and do now live on them. So great was the frugality of their father, who did raise a family of five children to man and womanhood, and left such an estate free, if they had not diminished it by trading. So it is obvious that with the ?50 allowed by the Law, and the ?600 of mine, which the Parishioners have fraudently got, and their own Glebe and house, with the perquisites, are enough to support a Minister. I have given to the Parish of North Castle and Bedford ?600, and put it in the hands of Col. Lewis McDonald, of Bedford, and Caleb Fowler, William Ogden, and Charles Haight, of North Castle, on June 6, 1759, and they gave their Bond. And it is my will that this may be at interest for the Parishioners, Church, Minister, and School master. I have given to the Episcopal Church in Stamford ?700, which I put in the hands of Peter De Milt, John Lloyd, Ephraim Smith, and Dr. Nathaniel Hubbard, all of Stamford, on May 12, 1761, on their Bond. I have given to Fairfield Church ?200, put in the hands of Stephen Adams, John Whitear, Nathaniel Adams, Peter Bulkley, Nathaniel Perry, David Barlow, Zacheus Morehouse, Joshua Jennings, and Jonathan Coley, all of Fairfield, on June 12, 1762, on their Bond, the interest to be paid for the use of the church. I have given to the Church in Derby ?100, put in the hands of Joseph Hull, Samuel Plum, Henry Thomihan, and Thomas Worster, on June 12, 1762, for the benefit of the church." I leave to each child of my brother, Thomas Talbot, and to each child of my sister, Catharine Talbot (alias Garrison), and to each child of my sister, Arabella Talbot (alias Harrison), ?5. I have given to my brother and sisters, above 30 years past, their Legacies. All my lands in New York and New Jersey are to be sold, and I leave all the proceeds and my monies to the "Society for the Propagation of the Gospel," to be applied by the Hon. Society where it may be most needful. "And I pray to Almighty God that my example may incite others to deeds of Piety." I appoint Rev. Mr. Jeremiah Leaming, Missionary of said Society, Rector at Norwalk, and Mr. John Livingston, of New York, merchant, and Mrs. Rachel Gould, executors.
Dated May 11, 1765. Witnesses, Jacob Dyckman, Jr,. Edward Stevenson, David Frazee.

All the rest to be sold by executors, and all debts and legacies paid, and I leave the remainder to my brother Peter's children, viz., Ida, John, Conneghty, Sarah, Peter, Abram, and Jacobus, And to the children of my brother Abraham, viz., Mary, Ida, Ann, and Peter, And to Peter Leyster's children, viz., Winne, John, Peter, Jacobus, Sarah, Jenny, and Alke, And to the children of Abraham Garrison, viz., Garret, Charity, and John, And to the children of Roeloff Schenck, viz., Marten, Ida, Elizabeth, Nelly, John, Abram, Sarah, and Peter. Alfred Lane and Elizabeth Ann (Goodnight) Lane McLaren

Alfred Lane's parents brought him to Texas. He saw Texas become a country and then annexed into the U.S. as a state. He married Elizabeth Ann Goodnight, the sister of the famous Texas cattleman, Charles Goodnight (of Goodnight/Loving Trail). He and his brother-in-law, Charles Goodnight, and Crawford Simpson became early Texas Rangers.

Texas Historical Marker Dedication Honoring Two Early Settlers: Simpson Crawford and Alfred Lane on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 11 am at the Highway 254 Road Side Park (Three Miles East of Graford, Texas).

Through different paths, both men arrived in the area of Black Springs, present day Oran, prior to the establishment of Palo Pinto County in 1857. Simpson Crawford was a successful cattle rancher and his holding eventually grew to 3100 acres. Alfred Lane raised horses in the Keechi Valley and was called a "splendid scout and frontiersman" by Charles Goodnight.

They also served as Texas Rangers protecting the frontier. The men are buried in Crawford Cemetery. The land for the one acre cemetery was donated by Simpson Crawford in 1886 to Palo Pinto County.

Please join us honoring the lives of these two men who were among the earliest settlers to Palo Pinto County. Following the dedication, refreshment will be served. A visit to the Crawford Cemetery is planned.

HUEY LONG AND ROBERT PROPHIT

HUEY LONG AND ROBERT PROPHIT

Most of Louisiana's newspapers, however, opposed Gov. Huey Long, including many rural weeklies, the New Orleans Item and its morning edition, the Tribune, as well as the state?s leading paper, the Times-Picayune. These papers ridiculed Long?s cowardice, capitalizing on two instances when Long had quarreled with someone, hit them, and then run. One of the persons was a small-stature, one-legged legislator named Robert Prophit; the other, the fifty-nine-year-old, hefty former governor, J.Y. Sanders.

WWII ROBERT PROPHIT AND DIXIE

"Dixie" -- Daisy Angie Dowell Prophit Bayless

Dixie (born in 1913) . . . What a character this Dowell sister was! When I think of her now, I recall her behind the wheel of her blue Corvair convertible, with her trademark white hair (yes, it was natural) flying in the wind, a brilliantly colored scarf around her neck and her hands adorned with flashy rings and bracelets. (My father, Albert Schlueter, who spent more than 50 years dealing with my mom's close-knit sisters, had his own nickname for Dixie -- "The Stray Gray.")

Dixie had a wonderful laugh, an easy smile and a great talent for music. Her piano was her life and with it she supported herself and her son, Bobby. She played piano all across the Houston area, at style shows, country clubs and piano bars, either solo or with her combo of musicians, performing as "Dixie Bayless and the Dixielanders." All this performing she did without formal music training, but with her incredible ear for music, she could play almost anything, from a jumping boogie-woogie, to a series of patriotic songs, to a soleful church hymn.

She married glider pilot Robert Prophit during World War II, but they divorced and Robert passed away of tuberculosis. Later she married again to Joe Bayless and lived in Pasadena all her life, many years just a few blocks from sister Willie. Flamboyant and fiesty, she was also a loving aunt to her nieces and nephews and a doting grandmother to her two grandsons brought into the world by son Bobby and his wife, Linda. Grandsons Scott and Todd brought much joy to her life. The spirit of Dixie's love for her family, music and entertaining lives on in the yearly Dowell family gatherings.

WILSON, of Eaft-Bourne, Sussex.
Created Baronet, March 4, 1660
The name of this family hath been variously written at different times, as Welson, Wylsonne, Wylsone and Wylson, but in these later times generall Wilson.
. . .The Baronet, whose pedigree is here to be derived down, is descended from an ancient and worshipful family of that name in Yorkshire, which hath spread itself into many branches there and in other parts. We find Thomas Wilson seated at Elton in Yorkshire 1250, 34 Hen. III. whose son, John Wilson, lived at Elton aforesaid 1270, 54 Hen. III. and married a daughter of John Livinter of that county, and left issue, Thomas Wilson, of Elton, who, by a daughter of Scarborough, had a son, Richard, who married Joan, the daughter of Thomas Reade; their son, Anthony Wilson, of Elton aforesaid, took to wife the daughter of John Prophit, of Pocklington in Yorkshire, by whom he had issue three sons, viz. 1. Henry, who died without issue; 2. Edmond Wilson, of Elton aforesaid, who continued the line; and 3. John Wilson, of Kellom of Yorkshire, clerk, and a prebenary of York.
. . .And so it continues with heirs

"Ship Elizabeth and Ann,"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The "Elizabeth & Ann," was being used in the slave trade at
the time of the 1715 Jacobite rebellion. It's merchant owners
thought they might be more highly rewarded by handling the
"transport" of prisoners for the King. The arrangement was to
take the prisoners on consignment and receive payment when a
receipt for their delivery was presented to His Majesty's
Court in London.

Formatter's notes:

The Captain's sworn statement originally appeared following the
list of prisoners.

This document is typed as written. Words were spelled as they
appear here. The letter 's' is sometimes written as 'f', as was
common in colonial times. I replaced the 'f', or 'long s' with
the letter 's' in surnames.
