1) My ancestor is JOHN THOMPSON born about 1804, Ireland, we believe in Londonderry. He moved to New Brunswick, Canada before or about 1828 when he apparently landed in Sunbury Co. New Brunswick and married to a SARAH SMITH.

New Brunswick Newspaper Transcripts by Daniel Johnson, show a marriage for John Thompson to Sarah Smith in 1828.

John Thompson and Sarah moved to Richibucto, New Brunswick where their first child was born 1830. Their earliest confirmed land grant is about 1839 and in 1841 John is listed on an application with a James Thompson who was also an early settler to the region and is believed to be his brother.

In 1844 Sarah gives birth to a daughter, we assume she is daughter of John but there are no more records for John. He disappears after the land grant tranactions of 1841.

Evidence supporting Sarah's maiden name as SMITH include her daughter Sarah naming a daughter Sarah Smith and her daughter Matilda naming a daughter Sarah Smith. Sarah Smith was born 1808, Tyrone, Ireland, both her parents were born in Ireland.

Although John and Sarah were both born in Ireland, their descendants consistently state they are of Scot's origins.

John and Sarah's children are named: Eliza Mary, Lucinda Ann, John Joseph, Sarah Jane, George Henry, David, Matilda.

Believed to be a brother of John Senior is one JAMES THOMPSON, born about 1814 in Londonderry, Ireland, he moved to the same region in New Brunswick and married CHRISTIANNE FEARON in 1848 and raised family, children were: George, Mary, John, Sarah, Margaret, Christie, James W., James Senior was Presbyterian in religion as were John's descendants. James lived next door to the family of ROBERT TIMPSON.

ROBERT TIMPSON born 1814, Belfast, Ireland, was married to LUCINDA THOMPSON, she was born about 1800 in Londonderry, Ireland, they had at least 4 children.

Finally, in 1841 there is a ROBERT THOMPSON who immigrates from Londonderry, Ireland to Weldford Parish, New Brunswick, he was a school teacher and based on the dates and family history, I believe he came here to attend his brother John's funeral.

This family may have been involved in the Orange Order, it appears that John's son, John Joseph is the head of the Orange Lodge #33 in the 1890's. As well, we have a note from the archive newsletters that a brother of John Thompson was killed in a canoe accident in the year 1841, although the brother who died is not named. The notation suggests that John Thompson was well know, possibly because he was the head the Orange Lodge at that time. Historically, there are reports of riots in the Richibucto region during these years. It could be that John Senior died in those riots, we have no other record of his death.

ROBERT THOMPSON moved to another New Brunswick location and raised family, I am just starting to research his line.

A ROBERT THOMPSON witnessed the marriage of John's daughter Lucinda to JOHN MORTON. I believe this was her Uncle standing in for her Dad.
