I have been researching my own family history and those of linked fisher families for more than 40 years now. I still live in the North East of Scotland in the small village of Cruden Bay situated on the coast approx 8 miles from Peterhead where I was brought up nearly 80 years ago.

My maternal side is STRACHAN on both sides as my grand parents were "double connected" with a Strachan brother marrying a Strachan sister. This led back to the 1600s with a direct line of fisher folk originating in Corsekellie in the parish of Lonmay. They didn't move very far via St Combs, Drumlinie to Roanheads in Peterhead where many of my ancestors still stay.

The main problem with researching fisher folk is the recurring names - in Peterhead BUCHAN STRACHAN and BRUCE are common and to sort out who is who requires a knowledge of the by names as each family was known by that to distinguish one from another.
Just a few weeks ago a friend told me that while she was waiting to see a doctor in the receptionist called Margaret Strachan and 12 ladies stood up. They were identified by their dates of birth.
But therein lies the problems with researchers attempting to sort out their own families with no knowledge of the by names.

My STRACHAN line goes back to Puckles- approx 1696- Puckles Sandie and Pucklesson appear in the records on Scotlands people.

But that is not the only problem - the fisher folk were very traditional in their ways and when a son was born, he was names after his paternal grandfather. The second son was named after the maternal grand father and the third son was named after the father.
A girl was named in the same way - after her paternal grandmother, then the maternal grandmother then the mother. This was not always the case as sometimes a child of Alexander's would be named Alexandrina or a child of William's was Williamina often shortened to Alexina or plain Ina - but the same for Williamina who could also be Ina.

Having had time on my hand's during lockdown I have been adding names to my family tree file which now has over 25000 names. Tonight I came across a file of Strachans which someone many years ago had given me. I wondered why it had collected dust for so long so began to check the namea against my files.

I discovered that the research had gone wrong around 1772 and from there it was almost impossible to sort out.

I am reaching out to those researching Strachan from the north east of Scotland who may need help as they are unable to travel or have come up against a blank wall with too many Strachans to choose from!

I am a hobby researcher - I do not wish to paid for my services- I am happy to help anyone with their research as it is more than likely I have already done it! I am going to stick with 3 surnames just now.
