Alford Alpha LAYTON of Georgia and Alabama
Alford Alpha Layton was born abt. 1828 in Washington Co. Ga. Tennille, Ga.I have not been able to find the names of his Mother and Father or siblings if any. He married Nancy Williamson orginally of NC.They had 5 or 6 children and Had moved to Covington County Ala. which later became a part of Crenshaw Co. Al.Nancy died and Alford married a woman named SINGLETON. No Children. She died about a year later. After that he Married a Mary Davis and They had either 1 child or twins. He and Mary bought a farm on Mt. Zion Road in Crenshaw County, Ala.
While married to Nancy, Alford served in the Civil War and was wounded in the Battle of Peachtree. At one time during the war he received a letter from Nancy that they had run out of food and could he come home to gather some food and he did as far as I can tell.
He is buried in the cemetary at the Mt Zion Church. According to his obituary in the Pike County Ala library, he died in 1909 noy 1910 as his gravestone says.
He is the ggrandfather of my late husband, Thomas Mortimer Layton (1925-2011).
I can furnish some more info but it is doubtful that it may be correct. There is a tree of mine LAYTON on Ancestry.com and my heritage.
There was a John LAYTON in Washington Co. Ga. about That time but can find no connection so far.
Looking for A.A.LAYTON in Georgia and later in Alabama
About 1828 in Washington County, Georgia was born Alford Alpha LAYTON.
His parents are unknown but are rumored to have been born in North Carolina.There is no trace of him as yet in that area of Georgia or any known siblings.
Then in the 1850 census there is a Alfred Laython, age 22 in Muscogee County, Georgia.This may be him but so far I have not proven this. Through the years later, there have been documents with his first name spelled Alfred. At this time in Muscogee, Georgia he was living with a free black and his wife and child by the name of Rueben Brookin.
Back in Washington County Georgia there was a major slave owner by the name of Benjamin Brookins. As I am sure you know that many slaves took their owners last name. Coincidence?
Looking for Alford Alpha Layton. He is sometimes in some records as Alfred and sometimes as Alpha(Confederacy records).He was born in Tennille,Ga(Washington Co) in approx 1828. I cannot find his mother or father who were possibly born in NC. I have checke
most records. I do find what may be him is Muscogee Co,Ga living with a free black(Rueben Brookins) & his family in 1850 census but his name is spelled Alfred Laython. He was 22 which would be correct. Then 1860 census in Crenshaw Co Al. where he lived until he died abt. 1910(have been to the grave site). He served in the Civil War and wounded in the battle of Peachtree. Any help would be appreciated.
