Need Info on Samuel C. Steele, arrived 1770
I am searching for any and all information about my grx7 grandfather, Samuel C. Steel or Steele. He immigrated from Ireland circa 1770 with his wife Elizabeth Lackey Steele and his young son Isaac James Steele. I would like very much to find out who were the parents of Samuel C Steel, in Ireland. I also wonder if he had any siblings. I have hit a brick wall with this research. Samuel reportedly (and it stated in his son's, Isaac Steele obituary) was killed by Indians the day of the Burning of Hannas Town in July 1782. He reportedly was plowing in a field with his horse; having completed his work he was on the road home. An Indian ( part of the invading forces of Canadian and Indian Tories) approached him demanding his horse. Samuel fought back with the Indian, who then struck Samuel with a tomahawk in the back of the head. Isaac his son, was about 16 yr old, ran into the woods and brushes and escaped that day. Isaac later married Jane Barr, and was a founding pioneer in Armstrong Co., a Rev. War vet, and was well-known. I have the complete history of the descendants of Isaac James, but am having trouble determining exactly who his ancestors were. I would appreciate any information.

Patriots who fell during Rev. War at Burning of Hannahstown, PA
I recently learned that my gr-x6 grandfather fell during the Indian/Canadian militia attack at the "Burning of Hannastown" in Westmoreland Co. PA. His name was Samuel Steele, an immigrant thru Ireland who joined the Westmoreland co militia as a Patriot. His son Isaac was there that day also but survived. I have googled several narrative accounts about this attack, but my gr-grandfather was never mentioned by name. I wonder where the victims of this attack may be buried, and if it might be possible to find a grave for Samuel. I have been to searchagrave.com.
I would appreciate all suggestions to find where to look for Samuel's resting place.
Looking for graves of Patriots fallen in "Fire of Hannahstown, PA"
I recently learned that my grx6 grandfather (Samuel Steele) fought in the Indian/Canadian Mounties attack on Hannahstown, Westmoreland Co. PA. This battle resulted in the burning of Hannastown. This was part of the Revolutionary War. Samuel was there along with his son Isaac Steele. Isaac Steele either escaped the Indians/canadians or was saved with other people who stayed within a fort a few days. However, I learned that my gr-grandfather Samuel fell during this attack. How could I find out where all the victims of this attack were buried? I have searched on findagrave.com with no results. Some of the victims were shot dead, and others died in the fire.
Traveling salesman P W STEELE in Western PA
My family told me that my great-grandfather, Plenty Wheaton STEELE owned a farm in Armstrong Co. PA .b. 1848 d. 1950. But I was told he made his "fortune" as a traveling salesman with a horse and cart traveling between Pittsburgh and Franklin PA. He has a brother named Lee T. STEELE who served in the Civil War with a soldier from Slippery Rock, PA. Lee returned to the family homestead in Armstrong county and reportedly gave many accounts of his friend from Slippery Rock, Butler Co. PA. PW enjoyed the description of Slippery Rock so much, he (reportedly) decided "to someday live in Slippery Rock". During his travels up the highway designated as Route 8 someone told PW that he had heard of a farm for sale in Slippery Rock. So PW did purchase that farm and moved his family to Slippery Rock. He bought the farm from a CHRISTLEY. The farmhouse was made of brick dug and fired on the property. The house was a relatively elegant home built in the Victorian style.
I am very curious to find out what company he may have been affiliated with as he sold his goods along the highway. I am in possession of some antique/vintage items labeled Fuller Brush along with some other interesting items that are labeled but not Fuller Brush.
The farm left the STEELE family hands around 1958. The new owner allowed the house abandoned until it was finally for sale, and in the 1990's it was restored, expanded and is now the Apple Butter Inn in Slippery Rock Township.
Looking for family members of Ethel Lane Jenkins Thompson
Ethel was born @ 1920 in Georgia. She later moved to Miami FL. Census records show a couple of Ethel Lane's who could be this person. She worked at the Jewish Hospital in Miami. I have a record of her second marriage, to a Louis Thompson of FL. She ended up in Pittsburgh PA. She does not remember her past.
Old census records describe her as "mulatto" or "Black". I have already checked the National Library of Florida, and Ancestry.com Any other suggestions are welcomed. Thank you!
Betsy Lackey married Samuel Steele came to PA USA
According to hand-written family tree done by my great-aunt, the first generation Americans on the STEELE side of my family came from Ireland, but I don't know for sure the year. There is supposedly a Samuel STEELE who came to US with his wife they called Betsy (maiden name LACKEY), and I do know they had a child in Cumberland Co, PA in 1786 named Isaac STEELE.
Supposedly they left a son behind in Ireland. I don't know if they had other children after their arrival to US. Isaac STEELE married Jane BARR in the US, and one of their 4 sons was Samuel. They also had 4 daughters. They were among the first pioneer families of Armstrong Co. PA USA. I have almost all of the info for Isaac and Nancy, and know where they are buried in PA.
I cannot find a record of a Betsy LACKEY whose spouse was Samuel STEELE.
Which of my greatx5 Aunts was mudered by Indians?
One of the daughters of Issac Steele and Jane Barr was, according to family records married to a Kissinger. I believe they may have stayed in PA. The written history states that Mrs Kissinger was murdered, along with her children, by Indians. I have identified 2 of the 4 girls of Isaac and Jane using the family records, but I can't find a Mrs Kissinger who is listed in "white settlers killed by Indians in PA." What other data bases might I access to find this Greatx5 aunt?
I have reached a dead stop in my search for Samuel Steele
There are so many Samuel Steele's and I am stuck finding my ancestor who immigrated with his wife, to Cumberland Co. PA from Ireland before 1763. The census reports I find are crude - they only disclose the number of "white" people in the household but there are no names or reference hints for me to put him in context. I have found a Samuel Dale Steele, but his progeny seems to have moved south of PA whereas my Steele ancestors mostly stayed in PA. Moving west of Cumberland county. I know where his son Isaac m. Jane Barr are buried in PA. and I have evidence of his service in the Revolutionary War. However family tradition says that his wife, also from Ireland is Betsy Lackey (or Leakey). I cannot find her. Left Ireland for the US with Samuel, leaving one son behind in Ireland. Gave birth to Isaac ( m. Jane Barr) in 1786 in the US.
Looking for Steele m. Kissinger of PA
My great Aunt, Celia STEELE Meals of Slippery Rock, PA handwrote a family tree and gave a copy to my father. Apparently the STEEL's or STEELE's first settled in Cumberland Co. PA but then were among the first pioneers of Armstrong County, PA. My aunt has noted that one of the female ancestors - who would be a daughter of Isaac STEELE (1763-1842) & Jane BARR (b. 1770) - was murdered by Indians. My aunt has this young woman, who also had children murdered at the same time, listed as Mrs. KISSINGER. I have been reading about Pennsylvanians murdered by Indians, and have never found the name KISSINGER.
I found somewhere during my research, a narrative "STEEL Family Notes". This describes a story told by Agness STEELE at a family reunion (aka Aunt Nancy) about "the SPICER-BOWEN Massacre". This family reunion was held August 7, 1889 when Agness Nancy STEELE was 88 yrs old. The Spicers traveled from either Maryland or Virginia into Westmoreland Co. PA. On the morning of June 4, 1774, The SPICER Family was killed by Indians, except for 2 children: Elizabeth (Betty) and William SPICER. They were taken hostage, and the Indians crossed the Ohio River Near Wheeling into Ohio with the children. It wasn't long before the children were adopted by the Indians. Lord Dunmore signed a treaty with the Indian tribe chiefs, in November of 1774. Betty was returned to her settlement in "Muddy Creek", Westmoreland Co. on Christmas Day, 1774. A few years later later she married William DAUGHERTY. They had 2 children, Elizabeth BURGE and Lydia HUBBS. After the death of DAUGHERTY, Elizabeth married Thomas BOWEN Oct. 16, 1791. Having had 6 children, they had a daughter Agness (b. April 27,1802) who must have married a STEELE. They lived in Davistown, Greene Co. PA.
I am trying to see if there is any link between my STEELE's and Agness Bowen STEELE.
