Alfred Louis TISCHBAUER (1853 - 1922) - painter
Alfred Louis TISCHBAUER was born 1853, in Paris, France. His parents were Alexandre TISCHBAUER and Marie Julie FAVAUD.
He trained as a scene painter and designer and worked at the Paris Opera, where he became involved in the Paris Commune of 1871, was sent to New Caledonia as punishment and from there went to Australia.* It is interesting to note that it was the discovery of the body of a Communard buried in the Paris Opera that inspired the tale of the Phantom of the Opera.**
TISCHBAUER was a painter of repute and associate of fellow Communard excile and artist, Lucien Felix HENRY. One of HENRY's sculptures includes a bust of TISCHBAUER.*
Alfred worked at East Sydney Technical College.* Two of his better known works are a watercolour drawing, Pyrmont Quarry Sydney and an oil painting, George Street, Sydney, 1883. Some of his other works include an oil on canvas, Flooding creek, Sale, Gippsland, a watercolour, Sale, Dec '95, oil on board, Stormy Coastline, and watercolours of boating scenes painted in 1905 in New York.
He married Harriet Vincent WATSON on 20 Jan 1897, at St Johns, Footscray, Melbourne. Harriet was also known as "John". Her father George Wade WATSON was an Archdeacon.
Alfred and Harriet left Sydney and arrived in San Francisco, California, on 9 Feb 1903. In 1910, they were living in Manhattan Ward 16, New York, New York.
On the back of a photo taken in New York in 1912, which was sent to his sister-in-law Alice Marriott EASTERBY (nee WATSON), he wrote, "From your old brother-in-law Tischi". His great nephew knew of him as "Uncle Louis".
Another photo of Harriet and Alfred TISCHBAUER, sent to Harriet's sister Alice and her husband, Harry Tinniswood EASTERBY, includes the following: "New York, 25th March 1912. To Alice and Harry from two New Yorkers fresh from the country. Remember that the idea of having our mugs taken together comes from your dear and beloved sister, John Harriet Vincent Watson TISCHBAUER in wedlock etc."
TISCHBAUER completed a signed and dated watercolour of a boating scene in 1918. He died 2 Feb 1922 in California. Harriet left San Francisco and arrived in Sydney on 5 Sep 1922. Harriet died 14 Jun 1925, in Ingleburn near Sydney, NSW, Australia.

Elizabeth MAYNE of Bradford, Devonshire, England
ELIZABETH MAYNE was born in Bradford, Devonshire, England about 1832. She was known as BETSY MAYNE and was christened on 30 DEC 1832 in Bradford, Devon, England. Her father was ELIAS MAYNE and her mother, MARY. Elizabeth's sister was FANNY RODD MAYNE; she was christened on 27 FEB 1831 in Bradford, Devon, England.
In 1841 Elizabeth was 8 years old. There is a BETSEY MAYNE (age 8) listed in the 1841 England census. At this time, she and FANNY MAYNE (age 10) are living with Joseph and Mary STIDWELL (both aged 30) in Black Torrington, Holsworthy, Bradford. JOSEPH STIDWELL married MARY MAYNE on 07 APR 1836 in Bradford, Devon, England. It is possible Joseph is related to Elizabeth's mother as her mother may be MARY STIDWELL RODD; however this is as yet unsubstantiated. Mary Mayne may also be related to Elias Mayne.
Elizabeth was married on 24 Apr 1850, in Bradford, to WILLIAM BRAY, a carpenter. Elizabeth's occupation at this time is servant. Her marriage certificate lists her father as ELIAS MAYNE, a carpenter. FANNY ROD MAYNE is listed as a witness on the marriage certificate.
Elizabeth and William's son, WALTER JOHN BRAY, was born 24 January 1851 in Bradford. The 1851 census was taken on the night of 30 March 1851. According to the 1851 England census, there is an Elizabeth Bray, carpenter's wife, listed as the Head of the household at 90 Fore Street, Bradford. Her son Walter Bray is one month old. Mary Stidwell, spinster (age 46), is listed as a lodger. It appears that William Bray, her father-in-law, is living at 88 Fore Street. FANNY ROD MAYNE is a servant living with a family in Bradford.
In 1852 Elizabeth is living at Bannawell Street in Tavistock, Devon. It is here, on 5 October, that her daughter NORA GRACE BRAY is born. It is evident that Elizabeth could not write, as she signed her children's birth certificates with her mark [x].
Presumably, Elizabeth and William had a son JOHN BRAY before 1854, as later children's birth certificates list a John as having died at age 13 months.
Her son, JOHN WALTER BRAY was born about 1854 in Plymouth, Devonshire, England (according to his marriage certificate). He died 24 April 1924, Sunnyside Private Hospital, Murwillumbah, NSW, Australia.
In July 1857 Elizabeth arrived in Victoria, Australia with her two children, John and Nora. She was an assisted immigrant on board the 'Maldon'.
After her arrival in Australia, Elizabeth lived with her husband and family in Black Lead, Buninyong, Victoria. This was part of the gold fields. Life was very tough.
Elizabeth and William bore and lost a number of children while living in Blacklead.
WILLIAM BRAY was born 16 May 1858 and died in 1859. According to his birth record, issue at the time are 3 living (presume this is John Walter, Nora Grace and William) and two deceased. One of whom may have been his brother Walter and the other his brother John.
The informant for William's birth is FANNY CROCKER of Blacklead. Fanny Crocker is Fanny Rodd Mayne's married name. Fanny and her husband John arrived in Australia as assisted British immigrants aboard the 'Thames' in 1855. Their first child was born at sea. This means that Fanny arrived in Australia two years before Elizabeth. The other Australian births for Fanny and John Crocker are: 1858 Hannah CROCKER born in Black Lead - mother's name listed as Fanny Rodwrayne; 1860 John Thomas CROCKER born in Linton - mother's name listed as Rod Fanny Main; 1862 Emily CROCKER born in Linton - mother's name listed as Fanny Rodd Mayne.

Elizabeth is living in Albury, New South Wales at the time of her husband William's death in 1881. Anecdotally, she returned to England after his death in order to collect an inheritance; however, she died before this occurred.

John MORRIS is reputedly the uncle of William MORRIS, the English architect, furniture and textile designer, artist, writer, socialist and Marxist associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the English Arts and Crafts Movement.
If this is true John MORRIS is the brother of William MORRIS Snr and son of William MORRIS and Elizabeth STANLEY.

Married in England on 4 Dec 1786 to Mary Burton (b. Abt 1753 parish of St Poultry, London; d. 1831 England)
Had three children
1. stillborn Oct 1788 Australia
2. Milbah Johnson (b. 1790 NSW, Australia; d. 1803 England)
3. Henry Martin Johnson (b. 1792 NSW) returned to England with family in 1800; married Hannah Bartram 1815.
Who were Henry and Hannah's children? Any help much appreciated.
UPDATE: 25 November 2009 - Henry and Hannah had no known issue. Claims that William Jonathan Johnson is a descendant of the Reverend Richard Johnson are unjustified. The Rev. Johnson may however, be a great uncle to William Jonathan Johnson, as his brother, Robert Ebenezer Johnson lived with his great aunt, who (according to information provided by Ruth Fielding), was Rev. Johnson's sister.

Mary DUNBAR was born about 1832 in Marykirk, Kincardine, Scotland. She married James DUNDEE in 1851.
Looking for information about her parents. According to the 1871 Scotland Census her father is James C DUNBAR born abt 1807 in Carrick, Kincardineshire. In 1871 he is living with Mary in Montrose, Angus at North St, Clark Land and his occupation is Wincey Weaver.
I have Mary's mother as Jane TAYLOR but have no further information.

Richard JOHNSON (b. 1821; d. 1880) m. (27 Mar 1847, Church of England, Camperdown, Newtown, NSW, Australia) Jane Frances MORRIS. Witnesses as their marriage were Patalina MORRIS (Jane's stepmother) of Camperdown, Sarah Emma MORRIS of Newtown (Jane's sister) and Ralph Mayer ROBEY of Linthorpe.
Richard's father was Richard Johnson, watchmaker, and his mother was Elizabeth Phillips.
Richard senior and junior arrived in Australia aboard the Layton in 1833.
Richard's sister, Elizabeth Johnson, married Josiah Parker on 25 July 1834 at St James' Church, Sydney. She died about 1860 in Bathurst.
His brother Robert Ebenezer Johnson married Elizabeth Byrne on 30 October 1834 at St James's Church. Robert was a solicitor and politician.
His brother William Jonathon Johnson was an organ builder and built the first Australian organ which can be seen at St Matthew's, Windsor today. Prior to becoming the parish organist at Christ Church, he was involved with music at St James' Church, King Street. He married Eliza Harris Tompson on 21 July, 1838 at St. Phillip's, Sydney.
Richard's brother James Johnson was an organist at St James'. He was married to Ellen. They arrived in Port Jackson, NSW, with William Jonathon Johnson on 1 January 1836 as unassisted immigrants aboard the vessel ?Salacia?.
Richard was a solicitor.

(02 Jul 1872, Gundagai, NSW, Australia) Eliza Jane ST CLAIR (b. 17 Apr 1853; d. 17 Aug 1914, Ocean Beach, Manly, NSW, Australia). Sir Charles KINGSFORD SMITH was a friend of the family. His brother married Herbert and Eliza?s daughter. Anectdotally, Sir Charles Kingsford Smith took his first flight from the Johnson family's chicken coop. His umbrella did not fly as well as a three engined fokker and he broke his arm.
