At the time of his early and tragic death, he had a growing reputation as an artist and poet in Western Australia, and had recently left his job as a customs agent in Fremantle to pursue these activities full time. Before he arrived in Western Australia he had been an Art Master at Geelong Art School, and before that, was a pupil of Frederick McCubbin at the National Gallery school, Melbourne.
I don't know the dating of his pre-Western Australian career, the earliest reference to him in WA that I have found is a newspaper article dated August 1895.
What I do know is that between 1885-90, the Turton Family were also living in Heidelberg, Victoria where McCubbin was also famously operating at the time. I would like to think that he and his future wife Rose met during this period but I have no evidence for it!
In Fremantle Western Australia, Carlton was active in the Congregational Church, where William F. Turton, Rose's older brother was parson from 1896.
He married the two in the Johnston Memorial Church during July 1897. The wedding presents were numerous and costly.
They had two children, Douglas Stewart, and Raymond Farquaharson Carlton. I know Raymond had a reputation as a journalist, but I don't know who for.
David Stewart Carlton died on the 10th of January, 1913 in a shocking accident in Perth that made the papers all across the country. He was killed in a lift accident in the nearly completed building where he had an office. The building was owned by the employers of his other brother-in-law, Arthur Turton (My great grandfather) I have been told Arthur supported his widowed sister and her children the rest of her life.
