Listen to our older family Members and record the stories.

The search for my Great Great Garndmothers husband has proved to be perplexing!

Mary Ann Hendry born March 1833 in Rayne near Aberdeen Scotland she Married Alexander Merrie 23rd May 1857 also in Aberdeen
She emigrated to New Zealand From the Port Of Glasgow in 1864 along with 4 children the journey took some 4 1/2 months. They embarked 19 May 1864 and arrived 3 September 1864 Boat called Sevilla under Cpt Kerr. There were 249 Passengers onboard 5 Died.

The cost of the passage was 15 pounds 10 shillings and a further 10 pounds 6 & eightpence payable on arrival at Bluff New Zealand. Her husband did not take this journey

My problem I can find no details for Alexander Merrie at all. There does not appear to be any records of emmigration into New Zealand. His Birth nor his death. He may have been a railway engineer, but this had not been proved only a story passed on to us, as many family histories have been told by word of mouth .

Lesson learnt from this is that we should take the time to listen to our elder families and record what is being said even though it might not seem important at the time. Write it Down.
