The Shields puzzle.

Grandma Mary Anna Shield's father Union was b in Olney, Richland Co., Illinois, Jan 1, 1854. No one knew much about his family history. There were family stories but not many proven facts. Finally Union was found in an 1860 census, staying in the household of J C Stewert. Other siblings were then found the same year in different households. Thomas M in the home of a relative, Samuel Colburn. He later served in the Il. 6th Calvary he attained the rank Captain. John in the household of Benjamin Ulem, He also served in the Il. 6th Calvary. Albert was in the houshold of Marcus Walker, He too joined the Il. army. Albert was a law man in LA and died in Monrovia. Cal. More and more information was found, the parents of the orphans was supposed to be Willaim Shieds and Hannah Ward. What happened to William and Hannah? Did they actually die leaving all the children orphaned? If any one knows the answer to this puzzle please let me know. I will share all I have on the Shields.

Looking for Harris family in Illinois

After searching for many years I finally discovered my Bates roots in Illinois, However my grandfather's maternal side is another puzzle. My great grandparents were Ezra Bates and Matilda Harris. Matilda's parents have eluded me. From census information I know Matilda was born in Illinois. Ezra and Matilda's first child Serepta was born in Effingham Co., Illinois in 1849. In 1860 they were in the Cumberland Co., Illinois census with children Serepta, Willard, Harriet, Melissa, Edgar. In 1870 they were in Big Springs township, Shelby Co. Illinois, with childrn Willard, Harriet, Melisse, Edgar,Clinton, Grant (my grandfather) and Henry. Ezra I assume passed away before 1880 because Matilda married John Cornwell and they were in 1880 census Paradise Township, Coles Co., Illinois. Two children were listed with them My granfather Grant and Clinton. What happened to Henry who would have been 10 years or less?? 1880 census also said Matilda's father was b in Virginia and Mother in Kentucy. In 1900 Matilda is in the household of Grant in Marion Co., Kansas. She is listed as a widow and 75 years old.
Matilda died in 1907 in Mulvane, Coles Co., Illinois but was buried in Burns City Cemetary, Marion Co., Kansas . Beside the grave of John Cornwell. I think she was probably visiting children or relatives in Mulvane or perhaps moved back after Johns death. Please help if you have any information about her people. I'd be so grateful.

Looking for Bates in Il

I finally found my gg grandfather in Illinois. In a census he was listed as a minister of the Gospel. I would like to know if he was affiliated with a particular church there in Cumberland, Co. Illiois area. He was married to Sussanah McNitt. Reuben Bates was born 1797 in Vermont, lived in New York where my g grandfather Ezra was born, then the family resided in Ohio, then Illinois.
I had been searching for my g grandfather's family for years and they were there in the same area of Illinois all the time.
Reuben and Sussanah had the following children: Ezra, Willard, Reuben, Marshall, Evaline and Henry C.
