NOTES
* updated as found for MaureenR
TIMELINE of John William Gannon & John Collis
* In Jan 1905 John William Gannon of Taihape and Mangaweka was bankrupt with bad book debts of £150 in Taihape and £83 in Mangaweka (total of $40,762 in 2018)
* In Aug 1906 there was a disastrous fire in Mangaweka destroying a block of buildings known as Munro's Corner. Gannon's tailor shop was one of them. From the first it was seen that it would be impossible to save the buildings so the bystanders devoted their energies to saving John's household effects, whose dwelling was in the rear of the building. The business buildings in the block were: Messrs Williams & Co,, auctioneers and grocers; Orchard the drapers and Thompson & Co., tailors (see July 1918 below)
* In March 1913 the business people of Mangaweka responded to the canvass for funds for the purchase of a Fire Brigade plant. Among the donors was the Collis Bros., and J. W. Gannon
* In June 1916 a J. W. Gannon of Mangaweka was called up to serve with the 18th Reinforcements
* In Sep 1916 John William Gannon and his son-in-law John Collis, invented and patented improvements to galoshes
* In Nov 1916 James Henry Sigley was selected by ballot for the Expeditionary Force. He put his contact as c/o Mr Gannon, tailor, Mangaweka (he was possibly an employee)
* In July 1918 Francis John Gannon Thompson (1885-1946), a tailor in Mangaweka appealed against going to war (was called in the 4th ballot) so he could help his mother run her 6 acre (rented) farm. (his name, occupation & location is interesting. Should be researched)
* On 3 April 1923 John Collis was trying to board the Main Trunk express at Taihape Station when he fell under a carriage and was cut to pieces. He was a well-known family man of Mangaweka, had formerly lived at Levin and was a saw-miller of Taumarunui
* In 1933 Desma was living at Broadway, Mangaweka (aged 15) when she won a prize in the "Trainlanders" Christmas Competition. She missed out on the first prize which was a first-class return ticket on the train to anywhere in NZ during the Summer holidays
