Descendants of John Cantwell and Mary Reardon

Journal by scantwell

Most of the research has already been done by other Cantwell researchers. I am trying to find more information on John Cantwell who died on Long Island, New York, USA around 1859. John's wife Mary immigrated to Australia with son William after the death of daughter Catherine and husband John, both died in New York. William married Winifred Stephenson in Gordon near Ballarat and had 15 children with 13 surviving to adult.

Hi there I know this post is from awhile ago , but yes I’d also like to know more information about my GGG grandfather John Cantwell who died in New York in 1859. I actually saw where he was born in New York in 1827 and his father Thomas John Cantwell b 1800 in Tipperary .. do you have similar information?

John Cantwell and Mary Reardon ( Cantwell / Mcfall) son William Cantwell b New York 1852 was my GG grandfather he married Winifred Stephenson ..

Do you know much of what happened to John and Mary’s daughter Catherine Cantwell ? Thankyou Colin

Hi Colin
I have only just seen your post. I have never been able to find out any information on John Cantwell and his parents or his marriage to Mary Reardon. It has been commonly thought that Catherine (known as Kitty) died in New York before Mary and son William came to Australia. The reason they came to Australia was that Mary had a brother, and her mother Mary Reardon nee already in Australia. Patrick Reardon was transported as a convict around 1832, and he married an Amelia/Emily/Mary Layfield and he set up as a bootmaker in Little Lonsdale Street, Melbourne.

I have had my DNA tested through FamilyTree DNA and my husband has agreed to have his DNA but I was too late with this latest Ancestry DNA discount offer as I think at least one person connected to the family have had their DNA tested through Ancestry.

Cheers
Shirlee
