EDWARDS a whaler in New Zealand

Looking for ancestors of Robert William Edwards, a whaler in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. Known more commonly as William Edwards born abt 1808 in what we believe to be Glouchestershire. He arrived in hawkes Bay 1839 though he may have been elsewhere in New Zealand previously.
His son John in a 1875 affidavit states his father was of a English shipbuilding family, but, 10 years later in another affidavit states his father was born in wales ??????? ...........
We understand he had a brother named John who may have ended up in Canada ?????
The children he had in New Zealand are (Hoping for a name carry)

Did he settle in Hawkes Bay or move elsewhere as there quite a number of Robert William Edwards in NZ?
Damaori on 2010-10-25 23:55:00Robert William born abt 1808 died 1894 in Waipukurau. His wife was known as Harata Wharehuihui a.k.a Puma md by Colenso in 1849 already with 5 kids. A house fire in 1847 destroyed all his personal belongings, so apart from the affidavits, we are at a loss. Colenso states in 1849 that Wm Edwards had been on these shore 10 years, but not sure whether direct from England or from another area of New Zealand.

Damaori on 2014-02-10 19:07:08Horiana, Nga mihi for making contact. Whaler Edwards became a Carpenter after Whaling ended and was involved (with his son Wm) in building Te Aute College. Harata Puma had whakapapa ties to Porangahau.
