Frederick Alias Jude

Journal by mamajeaninohio

My husband's family originally came from West Liberty, Kentucky and the Frederick family is quite well known in that area. My husband, whose nickname was Bud, grew up in the Mansfield, Ohio area from the age of 5. He had 2 sisters, Joan and Shelva. His parents, Hattie (Griffitts) and Finley brought their family to Ohio to make a better life for them and Finley first worked at the Steel mill and later ended up retiring from Stone Containter where Bud also worked until his death in 1983. I began trying to find out about some of his family ancestors years ago but it was difficult and some of the relatives just said that in the far distant past, one of the great-grandfathers was "adopted". While surfing the web one day I came across the website of The House of Jude and it told of a John Jude who came to America from England and after his death and the remarriage of his wife, Polly to a German immigrant whose name was Friedrich, the Jude boys "assumed" their stepfather's surname and became known as Frederick. Two of the boys reclaimed their surname of Jude when grown but the third and oldest remained a Frederick. The name of Jude was sometimes used by this son but the branch of Fredericks who remained in the area of Kentucky where my husband's parents lived are sometimes referred to as Frederick, alias Jude.
