I am looking for the Mawhinney and Bell Family From County Antrim Northern Ireland

Journal by ahbell

I am trying to trace my father family. My great great great grandfather William Mawhinney born 1782 died on 27 Nov 1870 aged 88 years old in Ballybracken County Antrim buried in Raloo Cemetery County Antrim.

William Mawhinney partner Ann (Known as Annie) Mawhinney (born Semple) born around 1786 died 22 June 1870 in Ballynure County Antrim aged 85 years

William Mawhinney and Ann Mawhinney (born Semple) had about five children, one known child, my great great grandfather Arthur Mawhinney born 1825 in Ballynure died 3 Jan 1905 in Ballygowan Ballynure buried in Raloo cemetery County Antrim. Arthur Mawhinney married Esther Mawhinney (born Blair) born 1825, died 1910 also buried in Raloo Cemetery County Antrim. They had ten children Jenny, David, William (my grandfather),Samuel, Esther, Annie, Hugh, Isabella, Crawford Blair, Robert.

My great grandfather William Mawhinney born 1851 in Templepatrick County Antrim died 30 June 1940 buried in Mallusk cemetery County Antrim married Violet Mawhinney (born McBride) they had five children Samuel,my grandfather Arthur, Jane, William and Esther.

My grandfather Arthur Mawhinney born around 1903 at Lynford farm in Craigarogan in Co Antrim died in 1986. Arthur Mawhinney married in 1925 to Elizabeth Mawhinney (born Bell) born around 1906 in Carnaughliss County Antrim died in 1983 born on the family in Carnaghliss Co Antrim.

They had three children John Bell Mawhinney (my father) and sister Jean and brother James they were all born on Carnaghliss farm. In 1933 the family moved to a farm called the burn on Sealstowns road in Craigarogan in Co Antrim and then finally to Ballyclare road in Glengormley Co Antrim.

Elizabeth Bells parents were John Bell and Jane Bell (born Hunter)they had eight children.
I have tried to trace Ann Semple without much success. Cannot find Ann (known as Annie)Mawhinney(born Semple) in any census My father John Bell Mawhinney talked about three brother who came from Fife in Scotland to Ireland in the 18th or 19th century. They settled in Magheramorne near Larne also Roughfort and Lynford farm in Craigarogan Co Antrim, I have had no luck tracing the Mawhinney from the Fife area in Scotland.
I can trace has far back as great, great, great grandfather William Mawhinney I have hit a brick wall with William parents. If anyone can help I will be very greatful.

Hi!

We are tracing the same family! My husband's ancestors are also William Mawhinney and Ann Semple.

We were not aware that Arthur had a son called William. ..... Or Hugh. We have only traced 8 children.

It is interesting that you comment on 3 brothers from Fife. I can find no Mawhinney in Fife but plenty of Semples!

I would be happy to correspond with you further on this matter.

Regards Val

Sorry for not getting back to you. I am not sure about William Mawhinney born around 1851, if there is any connection to Arthur Mawhinney and Esther Blair. Hi there,

I have had a look at my family tree I note that you're on it. Reading your description I make you a second cousin once removed. I do have a little additional information which I can provide. If you're still interested and looking at this web site let me know.

Nigel Mawhinney.

Dear -

I have a fair bit, rather more than I’d want to try and post here but the outline is as follows:

According to the rumours from my side of the family three bothers came over to Ireland from Scotland at some point with two settling in Co. Antrim and one in the Co. Down. Later I was told there were only two. The issue is unresolved.

In Ballynure old cemetery there are two family graves. One for Arthur Mawhinney (1823-1905) family and descendants and one for a William (2) Mawhinney (1826-1889) family and descendants. Arthur’s headstone remembers his mother Ann Semple (1785-1870) and William’s remembers his father, another William (1) Mawhinney (1782-1870). We generally assume that Ann Semple and William (1) Mawhinney were spouses and probably remained in Scotland.

I have spoken to a number of different members of the family who are interested in their tree and nobody has been able to find out anything at all about Ann & William (1).

A farm was bought in the Ballygowan townland area near Ballynure at some point which has passed down through the family. It has been exchanged (sold) between the two branches of the family descending from Arthur and William (2) a number of times but as of about 10 years ago was still in family ownership on the William (2) branch.

William (2) married Eleanor or Ellen McCrone and Arthur married Easter Blair.

I do not know a great deal about the William (2) side of the family though I did spend a (long) evening with a Thomas Mawhinney, a great grandson of William (2) who has done a great deal of family research and has copies of many interesting old documents in connection with the family and the farm.

Arthur Mawhinney had to my knowledge 11 children which included David and William (3). William (3) if I read your post correctly would be your great-grandfather. David was my grandfather. If I understand correctly then at one point David owned the farm at Ballygowan but sold it to a cousin transferring it to the other branch of the family and moved over to Magheramorne where he bought a new farm. He had 10 children including only two boys one of whom (Arthur) died at about 10 weeks and the other Thomas (my father) then inherited the Magheramorne farm, which is where I grew up.

You will note that there is a distinct paucity of names in the family!

I hope this allows you to firm up the basic structure of your tree and put in the details you have which all seem to fit with the ones I have but adding more detail.

Re the issue of Ann and William (1) - I suspect that further details on these two may be what you are really after, like many others in the family. Regrettably I cannot at this point help you with this and indeed can only say that we’ve all got stuck there! So if you could tell me anything you’ve found out or not found out about them that would be great. I was unaware for example that Arthur & William were supposed to have come over from Fife - I only had from Scotland.

Nigel.

It's only through my father John Bell Mawhinney who told me about the three brothers in Fife Scotland.I was hoping to see if I could get William Mawhinney mother or father I haven't had much success. He also mention a Montgomery which I cannot make any connection.
Thank you for all your help If i get any more information I will let you know

Good day

You may already have this but the marriage of Arthur and Esther has witness Robert Crawford. I suspect this is Esther's brother-in-law and she is a daughter of Samuel Blair (d. 1866) and Esther Crawford (d. 1852) of Ballyvallough. See Samuel's will in PRONI Belfast.

Also, is your Ann(e) Semple the lady who is 27 in Ballyboley in the 1813 census? The age is about right and so is the place. Semples may well have arrived earlier from Scotland.

all the best
