Mary Furness (nee Patterson) is buried in Palmerston North Terrace End Cemetery, block 056 plot 035
Re Smith Furness:
I discovered in the UKBDM records the baptism record of Smith Fourness (Halifax, UK) dated 16 Nov 1824 (sorry I dont have reference details - it was a while ago).
NB no reference to any other names - just "Smith Fourness". Fourness seems to have become Furness in the move to Wellington. In the papers-past record he is always referred to (including in his advertisements) as Mr S or Smith Furness. As far as I can tell he had a younger brother John who also emmigrated to NZ on the Birman, so would be ulikely to call himself John.
There has also been some confusion with his son Smith James Furness (Marlborough Express).
So Smith, John and (Smith) James Furness are three different people.
