JOHN WRIGHT PRESTON (of New South Wales)

Journal by nikkigg

I haven't delved that far as yet, but here goes...

John Wright Preston was transported to Australia from England in 1837 - have info on ticket of leave, etc if anyone interested... He married an Aboriginal woman Mahrahkah (or Molly Walcotte) and had at least one child, Charlotte (1829 - 1871), who married James Hyde 1817 - 1899). They had 9 children, one of whom is William (1860 - 1903), my great great grandfather. He married Mary Anne Ada Hughes (? - 1919) in 1886 and they had at least 5 children, one of whom was Charlotte Katherine Elizabeth Hyde (1884 - 1913). Charlotte married Frederick Burns (? - 1955) and had at least 4 children - Jemima (1911 - 1970) being my Grandmother. She had at least 7 children, with her husband, William John Watson (1900 - 1977). My dad is the youngest of these and is still very much with us...

If you can fill any blanks I'd appreciate it - I do have some additional info, but would like to go back earlier if possible...

HI there , my name is christina Lydiard. Im trying to research my family history as I was never brought up in my fathers family. What i do know is limited- second hand information from my sister. My sister has told me that we are decendents of the Awabakal tribe, that our relative is indigenous.I have been in contact with some organisations and the only response I have managed to get is what follows:
Convict(Prince of Orange1821) jOHN wRIGHT Preston had a relationship with an awabakal woman named (Mahrahkah). John and Mahrahkah had a daughter names Charlotte(1839) and when baptised her parents names were said to be John and Maria. Charlotte Preston had a relationship with a convict named James Hyde and had at least 10 children. Charlotte died in 1871. ...My grandmothers name is Lyla Joy Frost- it is said to be that the indigenous origin in our family is on my grandmothers side.I believe that one of my Frost ancestors married a decendent of James and Charlotte. Does any one have any information on any FROST marriages or children that married or had children into this family tree, as im trying to reseaarch my family tree and would like to know if Im a decendent of the awabakal tribe.

Also my sister told me that john married a woman with the name mary mcgee, mcghee, magee( dont know which spelling) and that she became baptised and they changed her name to Maria?...that they had 1 child. Ive been told by my sister that she is our great great great grandmother. I dont know how true this is?....Does anyone know if John and her marriage was a well recorded aboriginal / english marriage.

This information has been taken from the Newcastle Morning herald Sat June9 2012, under the heading of Public Notice Authorisation Heading
Listed in The Awabakal Peoples
-Mahrahkah (known as Molly/ Molly Morgan/ Maria Morgan)
-Charlotte Preston (Daughter of Molly/ Molly morgan/ Maria Morgan)
An application for Charlotte and James Hyde to marry was refused on Eccesiastical grounds. This information is available in James Hyde's convict records. As far as I am aware John preston did not marry Mahrahkah (Molly Morgan) Hope this Helps.

I can give you this info to help you out. Someone from UK but not related searched it out and sent it to a cousin or mine. Also found some info a few yrs ago when I was doing my research into wright preston & James Hyde etc.
So hope this helps:
About John Wright Preston James Hyde Amelia Preston Hyde & Marakah(aka Molly or Maria Morgan)

John Wright Preston b: c 1799 was tried in Sussex (1820) and received a life sentence for stealing horses. He arrived on the ship ?Prince of Orange? in 1821, and was on the list of prisoners transported to Newcastle per ?Governor Bligh?.
On 19th July 1834 John got his ticket of leave, and was pardoned in 1841. JWP took up with a full blooded aboriginal woman named Marakah (aka Molly or Maria Morgan). Marakah had taken part in the corroboree put on for the Govenor of N.S.W. (Gov Macquarie)in approx 1818 in the Newcastle region.
Marakah was from the Awabakal tribe who were native of Lake Macquarie NSW area. The source of this is Shane Frost who is a decendant of Marakah.
They had a daughter around 1829 in Newcastle who was baptised in church as Charlotte Preston (half caste). Don?t know when she died.
On 1849 John Wright Preston 49yrs married Jane Walker 17yrs old in Newcastle at Christ Church Cathedral.

Charlotte Preston was born in 1829.
She was the daughter of John Wright Preston & Marakah (aka Molly or Maria Morgan).
Charlotte was a (half caste aboriginal).
She met James Hyde and he sort permission to marry her but the authorities refused saying convicts were not permitted to marry aboriginals (the belief was that convicts might degrade the aboriginal people). They lived together and went on to have around 10 children regardless.
On 24th Dec 1851 Charlotte was committed for trial for stealing a note and paper from Isaac Dawes.
On 7th Jan 1852 she was found not guilty of stealing and at that time was living then with James Hyde.

James Hyde :
James Hyde b: c1816 was tried in for Highway Robbery Shropshire UK He came from Shropshire and commited his crime in 1835 with an accomplice on the highway. At the parish of Shiffnall between the towns of Shiffnall and Horshay at the bottom of Nedge Hill. .

He arrived on the ship ?Prince George? in 1837 aged 19yrs and assigned to the Australian Agricultural Company as a servant mining for coal as this was his occupation. He met an aboriginal girl named Charlotte Preston the daughter of John Wright Preston another convict sent for life in the colonies in 1821 who was at Newcastle also and her mother was an aboriginal woman named Molly Morgan and her aboriginal name was Mahrahkah. An Awabakal tribal Aboriginal ( the Awabakal Women were known by their tribe as Awabakaleen because Awabakal is the man, Awabakaleen is the woman.
On 17th Feb 1844 at Newcastle he was assigned to A. A. Co. Charged with drunkenness and served 14days solitary confinement on bread and water.
In1847 his ticket of leave was granted.
Don?t know when he met Charlotte Preston but he was living with her in 1852.
On 21st July James Hyde and George Brightmore were to sent to be tried for larceny at Maitland Quarter Sessions.
Charlotte and James had 10 children that we know of Amelia being the youngest.
Amelia who is my Great Grandmother.
James Hyde drowned in Lake Macquarie in 1899.

Hey, thanks everyone. I stumbled across this site while searching for John Wright Preston and was gobsmacked at the entries above.

My great grandmother is Annie Jennings (nee Moses) who is a daughter of Susan Hyde and Thomas Moses. My mother, who remembers Annie well is a wealth of info about Annie when my mother was growing up. It was only when we discovered the aboriginal ancestry that my mother was able to put a lot of pieces together.

Please do not rush me for information, as I have been concentrating more on my mother's father's side for the last couple of years, so have lost a bit of touch with her mother's side.

Please contact me by all means, but please don't expect immediate replies. I still work full time and have a lot of data with another side of the family tree to collate and gather (oh....the downside of 'well to do' settlers'!

What I do have is newspaper articles for James Hyde and John Wright Preston if anyone wants them. I haven't gone back on their lineage, so thankyou very much kathpreece, for the extra info on John Wright Preston.

The oldest photo I have is of Sarah Hyde and some of her daughters, but nothing further back than that, but that could be before cameras became available...not sure.

Looking forward to replies, and would dearly love to proceed further with this line.

Elizabeth

Molly MOrgan and John Preston had one child- Charlotte Preston, who married James Hyde.
They had 7 children, Susan Hyde being the 2nd of 7 children married Thomas Moses. They had 10 children, the 9th being Charlotte Moses, who married William Clarke. They had 1 child, Elizabeth Ann Moses, who married Thomas Rush. They had 13 children, the 2nd being my grandfather Edward George Rush.

Hi there!

I live in the UK and have just joined Family Tree Circles. My mother is Kathleen Preece (mentioned above) which makes me a descendant of the Prestons/Hydes. My mother's hasn't been doing much with the family history over the past few years, so I've now decided to delve into a few chosen areas.

In particular, I'd like to dig deeper into the stories of John Wright Preston & James Hyde (and related families). I'm keen to know more about their lives, and in particular about Mahrahkah - aka Molly Morgan.

FYI, my family line descends from Amelia Hyde (daughter of Charlotte Preston), who married a Foley.

If anyone feels they want to reach out and share any incites about the particular part of the family I'm researching, that would be great. I also have some of my mother's research, so I can check that Mum is happy for me to share that, if you're interested.

Reading one of the comments above was a good reminder of just how much time & effort it takes to collate this info, let alone get it across to someone else succinctly. In fact, it's taken me quite a while just to arrange my mother's paperwork into some semblance of order and wrap my head around it (and I'm still doing so). So I totally understand that you may be a busy bod who hasn't got time to while many hours away at the keyboard sharing this stuff. Hopefully others will understand that I'm a busy gal, too. The spirit is willing and infinite, but human life has its limitations, I'm afraid!

Meantime, I thought I'd share a couple of PDFs which I found online. I still have to finish reading these, but if you're interested, you can download them for yourself at the following addresses. They mention the John Wright Preston, James Hyde and Mahrahkah, offering some interesting background...

All the best!

My grandmother x 4 is also Mahrahkah. I am a descendant of Charlotte Mary Ann Preston and James Hyde’s daughter Susan. Susan married Thomas Moses. Their daughter Mary Ann married James Pollock. My grandmother was Mary Elizabeth Pollock and she married John David MacKinnon. They lived in Weston, NSW. My mother Violet Mary married Arthur Richard Gillam. They had 4 children. My niece has done significant research on Charlotte Mary Anne Preston and sent me a link to an ABC radio piece by Felicity McCallum which has its focus on Mahrahkah - An extraordinary story of the Awabakal people’s confrontation with white settlement.

I am also descended from Charlotte through her daughter Amelia. Her son William is my great great grandfather on my mother's side. Since most people on my mothers paternal side are no longer with us we have been relying heavily on information found on the internet.
