Journal by ngairedith

Joseph Polgalse b.1847, married Caroline Tannant b.1851, in 1873 near Motueka New Zealand.
I would like some information on how they got to NZ - where they were from - (someone was from the Channel Islands) and their children and childrens spouses etc.
Can you help?
Thankyou

Hi, according to data I have he was b. either 1 or 11 Nov 1846 and left Cornwall in 1847 with his parents Joseph and Johanna (Jenkin) and older br. William for Melbourne on the "Brooker". Joseph Snr was a miner under contract at Burra Burra copper mine. Abt 1852 he moved to Victoria Gold Fields where d. Elizabeth Ellen was born, then Castlemaine, and with 900 pounds earned there he came to NZ on 25 Dec 1854 on the "Rollo". More children followed (I have details). Joseph Jr married Caroline (b.27 June 1850 in Lower Moutere) on Nov 20 1873, registered at Motueka (but they/she lived at Lower Moutere). They set up home in Nelson then Mangatainoka nr Pahiatua in Apr 1890 (I have lots more details). He died 26 Feb 1929 in Pongaroa, Caroline on 11 feb 1942 in Palmerston Nth. Their children (9 sons, 2 daughters): Richard Thomas (b 3.10.75, m Hilda Foster then Violet Sandford; Joseph William b 24 Mar 1976, m Catherine McIntyre;Leonard Sylvanus b 3 Dec 1877 m Emily Powell; Henry Herbert b 8 Feb 1879 drowned aged 12; George Davis b 23 Feb 1881 m Gertrude Josephson; Ernest Arthur b 25 Nov 1882 (my husband's grandfather) m Sara Olausen; Rubina Eileen & Lilian (twins) b 9 Feb 1885, Rubina m Joshua Mathers, Lillian d aged 3m; Horace Tannant b 25 Jan 1888, drowned Anzac landing; Alfred Edward b 17 Oct 1890 m Eliza Cresswell; Nelson b 31 Oct 1892, m Minnie Olson. At Caroline's death they had 42 grandchildren ans 49 gt-grandchildren. Polglases still produce twice as many sons as daughters.
Caroline's parents Richard & Catherine Tannant were married inWelshpool, Wales Feb 28 1843 and were amongst the earliest settlers in Nelson. They arrived on the "Mary Ann" & settled in Moutere. They had 5 daughters (Caroline was the 4th) and one son. Her onituary said at her death she was the "last surviving member of the Tannant family".
I do have more specifics on some things if you need them.
Regards, Maria Polglase, Golden Bay, NZ

Hi again, I should have added that all of Joseph's family was completely Cornish. Joseph Snr was born 1815 at Truro. The name traces back to just outside St Austell in 1296, but most Polglases today originate from a parish called Breage.
Cheers
