family name change confusion:(

Journal by kathleenc

When my family (ggggrandparents and their children) came over from Ireland, their name was possibly McGinty, McInty, Ginty, or Genty. All I know for sure was my gggrandfather had changed the name to Guinty. Of course, you have to take into account census takers who got sloppy, immigration records that were almost illegible, people who just plain didn't know how to spell, etc,etc... total frustration! Anyone have any ideas?

I'm also researching Guyton, Cole, McAlister lines. Just starting on the GUINTY, SNODGRASS, PIPER line on my father's line. My ancestors came from England, Ireland, Scotland. They settled in Massachussetts, Kansas, Mississippi, Virginia, North Carolina. I have also been researching the Manning line on my fathers side. The Sanders line is nearly complete, exept the large wall between William Aaron and his ancestors (Thanks to DNA evidence disproving a large part of my work, and the work of others!). Would love to hear from any distant cousins I have out there!

Do you know someone who can help? Share this:

Hi Jerry. I think this makes you my second cousin, Irvin Michael was my great grandfather. His son, Walter Roscoe Guinty, was my grandfather. His son was Robert Guinty, that was my father. Do you know what your grandfather's name is? I have a list of Irvin's children somewhere in my "organized mess", I will try to find it. Do you subscribe to Ancestry.com? If so, you can look up my tree (Guinty-Sanders tree). Keep in touch!:)

There is another angle on the how's and why's of name spelling changes and that is the accents of the speakers and the recorder. In our family my Great Grandfather had a very heavy brogue, and his name is recorded as Hervey and Harvey, indeed there are two identical marriage certificates, one the State record , the other the religious one.
