I was interested to read the information posted about Motoitoi and William Dallas and the Hirst family from Orepuki. my grandmother was Catherine Hirst who was the youngest child of Henry Hirst and Margaret Hirst (nee Dallas). You might be interested in an excerpt from the book THE CRUISE OF THE ACHERON by Sheila Natusch MR EVANS AND PARTY WENT OFF DUTY TO THE NECK....KATHARINE (MOTOITOI) DALLAS, THE MAORI WIFE OF A MAN WHO HAD GONE OFF TO THE CALIFORNIA DIGGINGS, HAD JUST DIED, AND CAPTAIN STOKES HIMSELF PRESIDED OVER HER BURIAL, READING PART OF THE SERVICE. THE COFFIN COVERED WITH A BEAUTIFUL KAITAKA,WAS CARRIED TO A WHALEBOAT AND ROWED ACROSS TO A MAORI BURIAL GROUND, WHERE IT WAS LOWERED INTO A SANDY GRAVE.
