The family story is that Karl (Juche?), was a German living in England. He took his wife's surname on his marriage and was known as P. (Peter?) Anderson. Soon after marrying he returned to Germany - he said to see to some family business - but he never came back and his wife never heard anything further from him. After her husband deserted her, Jennett (Janet) Anderson had to take in dressmaking to make a living, for herself and her child.
There is an 1851 census record for St James Clerkenwell, Finsbury, for a Janet Anderson, widow, aged 49, Dress Maker, born Clerkenwell, and her daughter Sarah Ann Anderson, bookfolder, aged 14, born St Pancras (as our Sarah Ann Anderson was born about 1836).

There is the baptism record on Ancestry for Sarah Ann at St Pancras Church 9th June 1839 that shows mother Jeanette, and father Peter Anderson of Harrison Street. It says "dec'd" next to his name and by his profession "late a seaman". So it looks like he had died before Sarah Ann was baptised. There could be some records, possibly for his death, but I don't have world membership so you could have a look, or find somebody who has world membership to help.

Thank you asheppard for all the information you have found.
That is very interesting about the 2 christenings/baptisms. I believe the birth date is correct 15 July 1836 and it is given on both records. Why would one baptism take place at the age of 2 months, then a second when she was 3 years old? And what would be the difference between the "Non-Conformist and Non-Parochial Register" and the second "Select Christening Record"? The address given on the Non-Conformist baptism record is the same as a letter transcription we have from Peter Anderson to his wife in 1833.
On Ancestry I can see the actual record for the 1836 Baptism. Where did you see the actual record for the 1839 one where is says father is deceased?
And thank you so much for finding the marriage record. This does look likely to be my 3rd great grandparents.
So now to find Peter's birth details (and confirm if he WAS a German who changed his name) and death details (bef 9 Jun 1839 when he is listed on Sarah Ann's second baptism record). And to find Jennette/Jennet/Janet's birth details (c 1802 from 1851 Census) and death details.
Hello - It was me who first found the 1939 baptism record on Ancestry. It is in the All London, England, Births and Baptisms, 1813-1906.
Thank you crisp51. I found the record (only) England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975 and didn't think to go to another data index. I'm very pleased to now have the original copy.
