Juche / Anderson family of St Pancras, London

Journal by cybersuezee

I'm looking for the father of my 2nd great grandmother - Sarah Ann Anderson, born 15 Jul 1836 in St Pancras, Christened 9 Jun 1839 in St Pancras (her father was listed as Peter Anderson and mother Jennette). She married Henry Boulton Adkins my 2nd great grandfather 25 Dec 1860 at Henrietta Street Chapel (Baptist), St Pancras

Married by W.J.R. Vines. Witnesses, Henry ADKINS, Martha STEWART.

Henry Boulton's Address on marriage 4 Thavies Inn Holborn.
Sarah Ann Anderson's address on marriage, 54 Swinton Street, Pancras.

Marriage solemnised at Henrietta? Street Chapel in the district of Pancras, in the County of Middlesex twenty fifth December 1860

Henry Boulton Adkins 25 years Bachelor Watchmaker, 4 Thavies Inn Holborn, father Henry Adkins, silversmith
Sarah Ann Anderson 25 years Spinster, 54 Swinton Street, Pancras, father John Anderson, Mariners Merchant Service
Married in the Chapel Wakefield Street, according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Baptists by me, W. R. Vines, John Worrell, Registrar.
Copy extracted Fifth January 1861, John Worrell Registrar

The family story is that Karl (Juche?), was a German living in England. He took his wife's surname on his marriage and was known as P. (Peter?) Anderson. Soon after marrying he returned to Germany - he said to see to some family business - but he never came back and his wife never heard anything further from him. After her husband deserted her, Jennett (Janet) Anderson had to take in dressmaking to make a living, for herself and her child.

There is an 1851 census record for St James Clerkenwell, Finsbury, for a Janet Anderson, widow, aged 49, Dress Maker, born Clerkenwell, and her daughter Sarah Ann Anderson, bookfolder, aged 14, born St Pancras (as our Sarah Ann Anderson was born about 1836).

There is the baptism record on Ancestry for Sarah Ann at St Pancras Church 9th June 1839 that shows mother Jeanette, and father Peter Anderson of Harrison Street. It says "dec'd" next to his name and by his profession "late a seaman". So it looks like he had died before Sarah Ann was baptised. There could be some records, possibly for his death, but I don't have world membership so you could have a look, or find somebody who has world membership to help.

I found the christening record for Pancras

Name: Sarah Ann Anderson
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 15 Jul 1836
Baptism Date: 9 Jun 1839
Baptism Place: Old Church,Saint Pancras,London,England
Father: Peter Anderson
Mother: Jennette
FHL Film Number: 598164, 598165, 598166

and it says Peter (dec) late a seaman

but I also found this which is interesting,

England & Wales, Non-Conformist and Non-Parochial Registers, 1567-1970
Name: Sarah Ann Anderson
Birth Date: 15 Jul 1836
Gender: Female
Event Type: Baptism

Baptism Place: Clerkenwell, Middlesex, England
Piece Title: Piece 0039: Clerkenwell, Providence Chapel, Chadwell Street (later Northampton Tabernacle), 1835-1845

Father Occ: French Polisher

perhaps she was baptised twice same details same birth date, fathers occupation differs

or there are two families of Peter & Jeanette Anderson both with daughter Sarah Ann both born on same day.

I also found a marriage between
Peter Anderson & Jennet Watson

Name: Peter Anderson
Gender: Male
Marriage Date: 21 Jul 1831
Marriage Place: St. Andrew'S, Holborn, Middlesex, England
Spouse: Jennet Watson
FHL Film Number: 374371

details

both of this parish
Peter Anderson 'x' his mark
Jeannet Watson (signed)

Witnesses Peter Powney 'x' his mark & Catherine Barker (signed)

married by T or I Riddell Curate

it doesn't give occupation for either.

Thank you asheppard for all the information you have found.

That is very interesting about the 2 christenings/baptisms. I believe the birth date is correct 15 July 1836 and it is given on both records. Why would one baptism take place at the age of 2 months, then a second when she was 3 years old? And what would be the difference between the "Non-Conformist and Non-Parochial Register" and the second "Select Christening Record"? The address given on the Non-Conformist baptism record is the same as a letter transcription we have from Peter Anderson to his wife in 1833.

On Ancestry I can see the actual record for the 1836 Baptism. Where did you see the actual record for the 1839 one where is says father is deceased?

And thank you so much for finding the marriage record. This does look likely to be my 3rd great grandparents.

So now to find Peter's birth details (and confirm if he WAS a German who changed his name) and death details (bef 9 Jun 1839 when he is listed on Sarah Ann's second baptism record). And to find Jennette/Jennet/Janet's birth details (c 1802 from 1851 Census) and death details.

Hello - It was me who first found the 1939 baptism record on Ancestry. It is in the All London, England, Births and Baptisms, 1813-1906.

Thank you crisp51. I found the record (only) England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975 and didn't think to go to another data index. I'm very pleased to now have the original copy.
