What mode of transportation was used for folks immigrating from Nova Scotia to Boston in the early 1800's?

I have not been able to locate my family by ship, was wondering if their were other means. Thanks in advance for your help

Mine emigrated by the dozens across the border into Maine. Some settled there. Others continued into New Hampshire and Massachusetts. I am first generation here. Born in New York. There are records of both border crossings and naturalizations. Google is your friend.
