Robert McDonald Suddens (1857-1908) in Wellington 12 May 1887. Robert was a son of Thomas McDonald Suddens (1834-1917) from Scotland & Jane Martha Woodland (1837-1893) from Durham. They are both buried in Lyttelton.

Robert Suddens, a wharf labourer, was charged with assaulting his wife, Amelia Suddens (a cripple). Mr Dunn, for complainant, said that the husband went home on Monday last, drunk. He struck his wife twice, "knocking her silly." This sort of thing, he said, had happened very frequently indeed. Defendant admitted the offence, but said he could get no peace at home. He wanted a separation and was willing to support his wife. The case was adjourned for a week, his Worship advising the parties to come to some arrangement in the meantime as to separation and maintenance.

A MAINTENANCE CASE. Robert Suddens, alias Sutton, was sentenced to fourteen days imprisonment for failing to comply with an order for the maintenance of his wife, the warrant to be suspended if arrears amounting to £2 8s be paid within fourteen days.

PETONE POLICE COURT The fact that he had just pleaded guilty to a charge of insobriety detracted from the excuse of Robert Suddens made to Mr Riddell, S.M., this morning, when accused of disobeying an order to maintain his wife. The woman appeared in the Court in a weak, crippled condition, bearing the imprint of severe illness and in pitiful contrast to the unkempt appearance of the husband. The amount of the arrears was said to be £10. The accused stated he did not see how he could pay his board and maintain his wife. He admitted having had drinks. "That is the whole trouble" said the Magistrate. "If you didn't drink so much you would be able to do it. A man who could afford to get drunk could afford to maintain his wife" was the opinion of his Worship, who sentenced Suddens to one month's imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended so long as the sum of 10s a week was paid off the arrears. The first payment was ordered to be made on the 30th instant.
