ARCHER, Lance Corporal, STEPHEN RADCLIFFE, 7/509. Canterbury Mounted Rifles, N.Z.E.F..
Killed in action 22nd June 1915 age 23.

Son of Fulbert Astley Archer and Amy Charlotte Archer, of Fendalton, Christchurch, NZ
- From the Wanganui Collegiate School Memorial - Stephen entered the School in May, 1910. He was in the XV. and the Shooting VIII. After a brief career on the land at Opotiki, he joined the 1st Machine Gun Section of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles, and left with the Main Body. He landed at Gallipoli on May 12th, and was killed on June 22nd, 1915. Commonly known as 'Rusty,' he was universally beloved by his contemporaries. His Lieutenant, an old Christ's College boy, speaking of his death in a letter to his brother, said: 'It hits pretty hard, as he was without exception the finest man it has been my lot to meetHe landed on Gallipoli 12 May 1915 and was killed in action 22 June 1915

- He was a member of the Nelson Mounted Rifles for four years prior to enlisting for the front
- Arnold's brother was Private Brian Arnold (6/1770) - he also served on Gallipoli with the Canterbury Infantry Battalion

- During the South African war he enlisted with the eighth contingent as a private and saw active service. In later years he became a keen polo player and was a member of the well known Tipapa team.

- He enlisted in the main force and while in Egypt was appointed orderly to Captain T A Blake, veterinary officer of the regiment. As this duty would have kept him in Egypt he resigned and accompanied the mounted rifles when they were despatched to reinforce the infantry forces
