I found the birth of your grandfather, James Dixon Millar on < Freebmd.co.uk > registered in Salford (Lancs.) in last 1/4 of 1881, so I ventured a search from 1870 to 1890 in Salford and found this:
Births Registered July/August/Sept of 1874 8d 87 John Millar at Salford (Lancs.)
It may be worth further investigation for you?

In the 1891 UK census there is a family with the information mowsehowse has given :
living at 4 Brides Road, Stretford, Lancashire
John, Head, 46 (1845), a Manager Costume Manufacturer, born Scotland
Isabella, Wife, 45 (1846) born Scotland
John, son, 16 (1875) born Salford, Lancs
Nellie, daughter, 13 (1878) born Salford
James, son, 10 (1881) born Salford

In 1901 they are at 1 Ellesmere Place, South Manchester, Lancashire
John as above but Manager of Skirt Factory
Isabella as above
John as above but now an Insurance Agent
Ellen (Nellie) a Children's Costume Machinist
James D a Ladies Mantels Warehouseman
plus two nieces both born in Scotland twin girls aged 6 born 1895

Thank you for all the information you sent.I found it very useful.I have researched James wife who was Eva Priscalla Brandon.
Eva was married to James Sep 1907 at Brentford,ilford.She died in Sep 1946 age 64.Four children Jack,Douglas,Robert and.Eva,all deceased once again thank you for your help,it will keep me going for a few weeks if not years.

I found this marriage: John Miller to Isabella Dickson on 23 JUL 1872 at Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.

They appear then on the census 1881 in Lancs with only Ellen aged 3. You can find that info, free on < findmypast.com > not sure where 6 year old John was that night - possibly with grandparents??

I suggest you apply on line for the birth cert of your grandfather James Dixon Millar, this will tell you the names of his parents. You can then look for their marriage cert, (possibly as above,) which will give their father's names and occupations. You can then cross check against the census to confirm you have it all correct. You may well find John & Isabella's families by searching the previous census, which are on line from 1841 forward every 10 years.
I would also get John's birth cert so you know you definitely have the correct John.
