Louis A McDonald my brick wall

Journal by jwmilne

My grandmother, Agnes Garland born 26 Oct 1877 in Haysville, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada met a man Louis A McDonald somtimes in well we'll say 1906. They were to get married and so she gave him money that she had saved for furniture. He never returned. Oh, yes one other thing out of this relationship came my father Neil Maxwell Garland born 10 July 1907 in Haysville, ON, Canada. The info that I have so far; on my father's birth registration Louis A McDonald's occupation is a Cooper. His residence is listed as Wilmot Township(Waterloo County). My mother has told me what she remembers is that my grandmother pregnant with my dad went to find Louis but she cannot remember if she went to Buffalo or Detroit. Now the stories I heard growing up were that Louis was a travelling salesman from the USA. I have no idea where to begin searching or if I will ever be able to find the info. My father passed away 15 Jan 1990. I wish that I had started doing genealogy research before that time so that I might have been able to ask my father some of the question that I have. I however did not start doing research until 2000 after a family reunion for my mother's side of the family. I would appreciate any suggestion.
