McKENZIE FAMILY OF GAIRLOCH

Journal by johnkb

Hi

My McKenzie ancestors come from the Gairloch area of Western Scotland. My G x3 Grandparents Murdoch McKenzie and Catherine McDonald were Married about 1803 at Diabaig. My great x 2 granfather Duncan was born in Port Henderson on 28 Feb 1807 marrying Ann McPherson in a832. They had 7 children including my great grandmother Isabella born in 1860 in Port Henderson. The family moved east to area around Fearn in early 1860s. Isabella married John Kennedy in Lower Kincraig in 1886.

I would like to make contact with anyone with possible family connections.

regards

John

Hello John,

My greatX4 grandparents were Murdoch Mackenzie (also spelt Murdock McKenzie) and Catherine McDonald. While Murdoch's family was from the Gairloch area, and he and Catherine settled in Diabaig, Murdoch and Catherine were maried on 3 March 1803 in Urquhart, Inverness. On 5 August 1804, the birth at Diabaig of their son Norman was recorded in the Applecross parish registry. Norman was my GX3 grandfather. So I think Norman and Duncan might have been brothers. If so, I calculate that you and I would then be 4th cousins once removed. I am in Toronto, and have been in touch with Mackenzie cousins in Alberta and in Scotland. I am currently trying to determine who Murdoch's father was; I have good reason to believe him to be Roderick "Dubh Mor" MacKenzie but so far haven't been able to confirm this. Perhaps you and I should trade information?

Best regards,
Erik Penz

Hi Erik

Thank you for your message. Murdoch and Catherine are my great x 3 grandparents. One of their sons, Duncan is my great x 2 grandfather and I believe a brother of Norman. I also have been trying ascertain the names of Murdoch's parents. I am happy to share information, I have limited information on Norman's family.

Briefly Duncan married Ann McPherson. They had 7 children, the youngest Isabella is my great-great grandmother. She married John Kennedy and their daughter, Isabella married Peter Watt and shortly afterwards emigrated to Australia.

I look forward to hearing from you. My email address is johnkb13@hotmail.com

Hello John,

My ancestor was Murdoch Weaver McKenzie. His brother Donald was living in Port Henderson in 1813 when his daughter was born.

There are 3 other families in Port Henderson with descendants that match my line of McKenzies and their descendants with DNA.

I'm curious if you have done DNA testing or if any family members have? It would be a sure way of figuring out if there is a connection :)

There probably is anyways.

Jessie

Hi Jessie

I received your message with great interest. I have MacKenzie ancestors who lived in Port Henderson. My great, great grandfather Duncan Mackenzie was born at Port Henderson in 1807. His and wife Ann McPherson's seven children were born there.

I have recently undertaken a DNA test, through My Heritage. I am happy to find out if there is a family connection and look forward to hearing from you. My email address is johnkb13@hotmail.com.

Latha math dhut
I am researching the family history of Muirson or McKenzie-Muirson or McKenzie
Sir Hector McKenzie, 4th Baronet of Gairloch was my Great great, great, grandfather,
His daughter (Jean / Jane Christian Mckenzie, born abt 1780 married Thomas Muirson, born circa 1788 my great, great grandfather. Jane Christian McKenzie’s mother was Jane Urquart (Sir Hector’s housekeeper! Thomas & Jean married at Urquhart and Logie Wester, Ross and Cromarty in 1808. I know Thomas Muirson was a Builder / Architect and I do have details of some of his work. I believe he had his offices in Inverness
The first names of their children were: Christian, Alexander, Jane, Hector, Isabella, Francis, Kenneth & Catherine (Muirson) – I do have birth dates.
Jane, Isabella, Francis, Kenneth & Catherine emigrated from Scotland in 1838 on the St George and I believe most of them settled in Victoria. Francis Muirson was my great, great grandfather
I know Thomas Muirson was a Builder / Architect and I do have details of some of his work. I believe he had his offices in Inverness
I don't have any pictures or information about their lives in the Black Isle. Is there anyone out there that can help me please.
Regards, Kaye Mckenzie-Muirson, Tauranga, New Zealand
