Thank you very much for your response. I'm only just starting out here but my late father had done some research over 20 years ago and one question he hadn't been able to answer was Jerry's origins. We had him down as arriving in NZ on Hobson's ship in 1840 but there was a suspicion that he had previously been here (NZ) before that arrival. Will need to grab Dad's research but I think he had listed an Elizabeth Smith as wife but this was in 1850 (the marriage) and she was his junior by some considerable number of years so possibly his second wife - apparently they had 14 children from whence I'm a descendent

Looks like we are related..... Jeremiah (Jerry) Waite is my 3 x Great Grandfather. You are right he had 2 x formal wives and 1 x "informal" wife. The two wives names were Ann Waite (Nicholson) and Jane Elizabeth Waite (Smith) the informal wife who he had 3 x children with was Betsy Northwood. Jerry married Jane Elizabeth Smith on 24th May 1950. She was 22 and he was 35.
