THE FARM THAT MADE ME A LOCAL HISTORIAN IN 1988.
COUNTRY.
Messrs. A.E.Gibson and Co. report having sold,on behalf of Mr.G.E.Woods (sic, Wood), his farm at Overnewton, Tullamarine, containing 114 acres, to Mr Alfred Cock, of Broadmeadows. (P. 5, Argus, 17-10-1912.)

It is apt that the cover photo shows my great uncle's farm on Melway map 15 which is coloured yellow south of Annandale Road and contains the road to the radio masts in 15 A2.

Sharps Rd was the boundary between the parishes of Doutta Galla (south) and Tullamarine (north.) This boundary extended west to the Maribyrnong River just south of the historic Arundel bridge with the river to the west continuing as the boundary between the parishes of Tullamarine and Maribyrnong, enclosing the part of the ARUNDEL closer settlement accessed via Browns Road.

The yellow frontage on the south side of Annandale NORTH of the line of Sharps Rd was that of the 114 acre 2 roods 31 perches of lot 10 of the ARUNDEL Closer Settlement which was mainly in section 2 Tullamarine (Annandale) but also included the quarry as the Arundel Creek was the boundary between lots 10 and 11. The boundary between section 1 (Arundel) and Annandale is indicated by the Annandale Rd bend at the right hand side of Melway 14 K1.

William Taylor of Overnewton, (homestead, Melway !4 A4) was granted much land to the west, such as today's Taylors Lakes, but also later purchased Arundel and Annandale. After his death much of his estate was resumed by the Crown with his land west of the river becoming the Overnewton Closer Settlement and that in the parish of Tullamarine becoming the Arundel Closer Settlement.

The eastern 330 acres of Annandale were not part of the closer settlement and became two 165 acre farms east of the start of Steeles Creek occupied by Thomas Nash and Bill Parr.

The part of Alf Cock's Glenview shaded yellow in Melway 15 A2 (bottom half) and A3 was part of section 20 Doutta Galla. Section 20 was between Keilor Park Drive (formerly Fosters Rd) and the river between the lines of Sharps Rd and Gymkhana Place (15 B6.) This may have been bought from Thomas Nash, (son of Charles Nash Snr. of Fairview), who also owned land in this section.

My maternal grandfather, Frederick William Cock, had moved to Bunyip and ran the New Bunyip Hotel on the three chain road (Princes Highway.) Longwarry was only 5 km away from the Bunyip Township and it is possible that in the course of visiting Fred, Alf had become acquainted with the Wood family and that it was not just a coincidence that G.E.Woods was the original selector of lot 10, Arundel Closer Settlement from the crown. The acquaintance eventually resulted in matrimony.*

We take the following from the Sunbury
News :-As a result of the special land
board, held at the Lands office, the whole
of the Arundel and Annandale portions of
the Overnewton estate were allotted to
settlers, and not one-half of the applicants
for blocks could be supplied. The land
was subdivided into 22 holdings of areas
ranging from seven to 122 acres, with
values ranging from £185 to £1,175, and
in the case of the homestead, £3,100, the
total value being about £16,000. - Altoge-
ther 50 applicants appeared before the
board, and these, it was shown by their
applications, were worth, on an average,
about £300 each, in a number of cases
being persons worth over £1,000. Evi-
dence of the applicants was taken, and
great difficulty was experienced in deter-
mining between the claims in many cases.
The following were successful: Block 1,
66a., Patrick Fox, Keilor; block 2, 61a.,
T. L. Anderson, Bacchus Marsh; block 3,
52a., J. Angus, Moonee Ponds; block 4,
59a., E. Angus, Moonee Ponds; block 5,
70a., A. Wallace, Cranbourne; block 6,
80a., J. Buchanan, Launching-place;
block 7, 86a., A. Williamson, Moonee
Ponds; block 8, 113a., Elizabeth William
son, Moonee Ponds; block 9, 120a., M.
Geraghty, Keilor; block 10, 114a., G.
Woods, Longwarry;
block 11, 32a., C.
Youren, Albert Park; block 12, lla., J.
M'Farlane, South Yarra; block 13, 9a.,
R. Griffiths, Keilor; block 14, 12a., J.
Wallace, Clyde; block 15, 7a., A. Birch,
Ascotvale; block 16,7a., J. Barr, Arundel ;
Block 17,9a., Mary Angus, Moonee Ponds;
block 18, 7a., T. Birch, Keilor; block 19,
8a., Ellen Hassed, Keilor; block 20, 8a.,
Edward Hassed, Keilor; block 21, (home
stead), 122a., Alec. Cobden, St. Kilda;
block 22, 57a., Emma Cobden, St. Kilda.
Two allotments of the adjoining Over
newton estate were also selected, leaving
17 still to be taken up.(P.3, The Bacchus Marsh Express, 16-12-1905.)

* COCK-WOOD. — The engagement is announced of Jean, younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Cock, Glenview, Tullamarine, to Kenneth C., son of the late Mr. and Mrs. E. B.Wood, of Minyip. (P.12, Argus, 8-6-1938.)

HOW GLENVIEW MADE ME A LOCAL HISTORIAN.
I was researching rate records at Broadmeadows for Ken Gibb.
Imminent elections meant I would not have access to the strongroom for a while so the rates officer gave me a Tullamarine/ Will Will Rook map which showed A.COCK as the grantee of c/a 10 of the Arundel Closer Settlement.
The published history of Tullamarine contained 1.5 foolscap pages and nothing about Alf Cock.
I immediately made a bicentennial commitment to acknowledge thousands of pioneers such as Alf who had never rated a mention.
Gordon Henwood, who grew up on the Arundel Closer Settlement, told me that I should see Johnny Fenton who gave me a list of contacts which rapidly snowballed.

Because of difficulties recently in submitting journals, this journal was composed on the WE REMEMBER TULLAMARINE Facebook page, as several recent journals about the area's pioneers have been. The cover photo referred to is on this page.

Itellya is researching local history on the Mornington Peninsula and is willing to help family historians with information about the area between Somerville and Blairgowrie. He has extensive information about Henry Gomm of Somerville, Joseph Porta (Victoria's first bellows manufacturer) and Captain Adams of Rosebud.
