The Brick Wall

I am trying to connect beyond my ggrandfather, Charles McCago Johnson who was born in Kentucky in 1843. He ran off to join the Confederate army (Bowling Green. After the war he could not find any of his family. He went to Texas where he met his future wife, who was the daughter of a family friend from Kentucky, Nannie Bourne. They married in Fort Worth, Texas and eventually ended up in Southwestern Oklahoma, in the Kiamichi Mountains near Clayton in an unincorporated community of Nashoba. They had four children. Charles M. is buried in the Nolia Cemetery.

What my grandfather told me is that his father was the youngest of 7 children. He was raised by his grandparents. It was always assumed that something happened to his parents, but I sometimes wonder if he was born out of wedlock by one of the older girls in the family and was raised by grandparents as their own child. Although his birth year shows up as 1843, he may not have been that old. Rumor also has it that he was underage when he slipped off to join the Confederacy.

One of my ggreatgrandfather's sisters married a Newberry. One of his brother's name was Critt.

My grandfather told me how his father would explore in and around Mammoth Cave as a youngster.
