Elias Bowden. Born about 1822 Virginia USA. Died Auckland New Zealand 1873 First recorded in Auckland1855. Where was he in the years between 1822 and 1855?

There is some indication that he was at the battle of Ruapekapeka in New Zealand in 1845 and had arrived on a British naval ship HMS Castor. If so where had he joined the ship, and why was an American on board.
