Netherton, New Zealand,

Can anyone tell me how and why the little town of Netherton in the North Island of New Zealand was named??
I descend from ancestors who had a farm called Netherton , in Ayrshire, Scotland. The farm still exists and is still held by family.
Where would I go or look to find the history of Netherton, NZ?

Success!

My quest for Joss family members have had a little win! For years I have tried to trace my ancestor, James Joss, born Banff, seaman, whaler and settled in Stewart Island, NZ. Lost at sea after a supposed shipwreck and murder.
My quest, has found his brother John Joss, a successful shipbuilder and owner. He sailed from Hartlepool, and eventually died there, 1873, married Elizabeth, now I have found his brothers Walter and Alexander, as well.
Do Merchant Navy Seamen, records give details of families etc?

John, b.1816, Walter, b. 1805, Jamesc1800 ?, and Alexander Joss,b ?Banff, Scotland

Their parents were John Joss/Joass and Isobel, nee Riddoch.
I am trying to find who they married, I have found merchant navy LDS records for them. But it dosent tell me there parents names.
Also history has it that JOHN sailed successfully out of Hartlepool and finally settled there as a shipowner and died 1877.
ALEXANDER, also sailed and eventually gave up the sea and became a coastguard near Aberdeen, .
WALTER, sailed out of Newcastle, but died abroad after serving abroad ship during the Crimean War.
JAMES, sailed successfully as a whaler and sealer off New Zealand. His life is well documented up until his disappearance in 1846, aboard his brigantine, "The Rovers Bride" in the Pacific, ( Samoa).
I would be so thrilled if someone could find the link to connect all these men and sisters together.
I have some research done but if I could get there dates of marriage etc I would be be able to connect them to our family in New Zealand.
