1837 August 23 Birth of Elizabeth Caldwell Nee Cooper Reputed to Be First White Female Child Born IN the Settlement of Melbourne

A photocopied page 606 from an unknown source (? of Victoria Vol 3?) asserts Elizabeth Caldwell as:
"Mrs Daniel McKenzie daughter of Horatio Cooper, born in Bourke Street, Melbourne, on 25 August 1837, was long thought to be the first white female child born in the settlement. However, an unsigned note on the back of the photograph states: 'The daughter of R. S. Webb was born in Melbourne on 13 December 1836.' In the Royal Historical Society of Victoria."
Research so far has found first white male child born:
(Trove) A newspaper article published in The Argus (Melbourne, on Sat 29 Sep 1934 Page 11 and titled "THE FIRST WHITE CHILD" states:
"...William James Hobart Thorne, was the first while
child born and christened In Victoria.
His father was on officer in the Marines,
and the child was bom at Sorrento in
1003. The Rev. Robert Knopwood, chap-
lain to the fleet, performed tho christen-
ing ceremony under a gum tree, Governor
David Collins acting as godfather. The
child was christened William James
Hobart Thorne after Lord Hobart, Secre-
tary of State for the Colonies at the time.
The family then moved to Tasmonlo, ond
grants of land obtained by the Thorne
family have been In our possession more
than 130 years. W. J. H. Thorne grew
up and married Miss Moffatt, a member of
a well-known New South Wales family.
A descendant of this union married Mr.
D S. Wallace, tho Victorian owner of
Carbine, Australia's greatest racehorse.
A member of the Henty family was the
second whlto child born in Victoria.
Another Item of Interest lu connection
with our family association with Vic-
toria and the visit of Prince Henry is
that my grandfather. Captain William
Nassau Holmes, served for more than 30
years with the 00th King's Royal Rifle
Corps before settling on lils estate, Dllk
hoosha, Scottsdale (T.), tho 60th Rpyiil
nines heinir Prince Henry's regimen."
