HENRY LEWER (1856-1918) & MARY JANE PRIER (1858-1925)
written by great grandchild Rex LEWER
Our Henry LEWER born 1856 had the nickname of "IRON JAW HARRY." Legend has it that he used to participate in show fighting that took place in the Palmerston North Opera House. Presumably as a challenger to professional fighters.
When he was 24 he married Mary-Jane PRIER at the Wellington Registry Office on the 7th April 1880. Witnesses were Jane's father William PRIER, (her mother was Susannah nee BIRD). The other witness was Emma (?) LEWER. The (?) could be Mary - must have been Henry's sister rather than his mother. Henry's brother Charles married Jane's sister Elizabeth PRIER at almost the same time.
They had the usual large family. The first birth registered was for Henry Charles born 5th Jan 1881 at Ohariu with grandfather William PRIER as the informant.
It appears that by the mid 1880's Henry had moved via Foxton (port) to the Manawatu area as a daughter Ethel Grace was born in Palmerston North 15th March 1884.
Henry worked during his active years in the Timber Industry e.g. McGREGOR'S Mill in Orangiponga so this and places like Ohingaiti, Hunterville, Linton figure as the places his children grew up in. There is also the rumour that he spent time clearing the bush from land he bought for re-sale when cleared.
Henry died at aged 62 on the 15th Dec 1918 at Pahiatua where he was a nightwatchman and Mary-Jane died aged 66 on the 21st July 1925 at Porirua.

Walter Francis Lewer married three times - to Elizabeth Hilliar who died 1918, then he married my great-great-aunt Elizabeth (Bessy) Flannagan in 1922; I suppose it id not last long and they divorced for the family do not remember her being married. And then in 1938 he married to Eunice Rita Dudson who remained with him until he died. There were children and grandchildren.
