Agnew Family - New Zealand

Article by jbonnor

My names Jeannette but I am known as Jay and it has been 7 years since mum passed and I thought it would be great to research her family so here I am. I have limited info from 1 sister the other don't talk to each other or me so would love any thing anyone has.
All I know is that mum was born4/12/1923, Olive Levina Agnew and her mother was Ellen Olive Agnew, nee Johnson.

So if you can help please contact as this is all new to me and a start of a journey.

Cheers Jay

hi jbonner,

before I get started, do you know if your grandmother and/or great grandmother was from Upper Hutt?

by jbonnor on 2012-03-17 19:50:29

Yes certainly was. Mum had 7 children and most of us live further afield now but still have sister in Lower Hutt. I was born in Upper Hutt.

ok, thank you
see what I can do

at this stage it appears that your great grandmother was divorced (or at least a divorce was petitioned in the Supreme Court by her husband but haven't yet followed it through) due to 'an indiscretion' with a member of a well known early settler family of the Hutt of whom my ancestors were related :)

this was big news in those days
have you heard this story ??

by jbonnor on 2012-03-17 21:14:21

No have not heard, have spoken with my sister and she has not heard either and mum never said a word so we presume she didn't know, But back then It probably was hushed up. Have just found out mum was born in Petone, if this helps.

Please keep in touch
Cheers Jay

My grandmother is an Agnew as well who also lived in Upper Hutt, I don't know much about family history though I've only met her and her late sister and then my mums siblings... I know we came from Ballamena in Northern Ireland and possibly before then France but name was agneaux (excuse spelling) which sounds almost identical thats all I know :)

Mum was one child of a large family Joe, Ian, Olive, John, Peter, Enid, Ngarie and Ken.
Granny Agnew was born 1901 in Upper Hutt Died 1966 Death registration number 28136 aged 64 years. Grandad John was born in Otanomomo His parents were William Agnew born 1870 at Taieri Beach and Jane Mulrine born at Palmerston in 1877.William's parents were Thomas Agnew and Margaret Agnew. Thmas came out to NZ aboard the Abokura which landed in Dunedin from their he travelled south to settle in Taieri Beach just 1.5 kms up the river on the left side of the river looking inland there is a track still up to where the house was. In the old country he was a farmer with his brothers but due to famine sold his piece to his brthers and imigrated. When he arrived in NZ it was very primitive and he began his new life with his carpentry tools he had bought out with him he pit sawed timber straight from the bush and built many of the dwellings in Taieri Beach including the store and the house beside it. There was a bit of a story about Thomas he was married when he set out for NZ however his wife died on the journey and while on board he met and married Margaret Agnew her maiden name was Agnew but she was no relation to Thoas Agnes Family. As for Granny Agnew her life is a little more and she was as I said born in Upper Hutt in 1901. Rumour was that her parents split up when she was very young although her father did look after her finacially for many years in fact i believe until she was a adult. With the family split so a lot of the family history was also it was even said there was a name change as the family of Ellen father was of nobility in Upper Hutt. I was suggested that I put a t in Johnson I have not ventured any further due to personal reasons.

As a child Mum and I visited the cemetary at Akatarawa and she showed me alot of the relations there and told me her Mother had shown her these graves of relations and I have a faint memory that some did have a t in the Johnston name also another name but I forget, I was very young at the time it was one of those times when Mum was okay.
