Hi,
Im having trouble finding information on Ann Mercer CROSS b.1853 Rainford, Lancashire
Her father is supposedly William Grapel Cross & her mother may be Ellen Christine Johnson/Parker.
Ann was born in Rainford, Lancashire around 1853. I can find no other info on her.
William Grapel Cross was b.~1831 in Prescot, Lancashire.
Ellen Christine Johnson was b.~1831 in Liverpool, Lancashire.
Ellen is also known as Christina Parker.

Any pointers on info regarding Ann Mercer Cross would be greatly appreciated.

William & Ellen had 4 other children (that l know of):- James b.1856 Prescot, Jane P. b.1857 Liverpool, George b.1859 Prescot & William b. 1860 Prescot.

Thanks

I have done some research on this family and was not aware of Ann Mercer Cross although the Mercer name appears in the family of William's brother James too.
As far as I was aware William Grapel Cross only had one child, William Bailey Cross. Jane Parker Cross was his step-daughter. His wife Ellen was first married to George Parker. William B. and Jane P. are the only children who appear in the 1861 census.

These are some of the details I found about William Grapel.

He married Ellen Christina Parker in 1862, Ellen's father is down as John Johnson and she listed as a widow. This would suggest that any child born before 1862 could have surname Parker or Taylor if she did not actually marry.

Hi noggin,
I received the information on Ann Mercer Cross from a gentleman in Lancashire back in the mid 1980s.
He was a qualified genealogist who happened to be researching several names that crop up in the Cross line. So he started researching the Cross tree & sent me the information. Everything else he sent me, l have managed to verify. Ann is a stumbling block for me - so any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks for the information you have set out. You mention the surname Taylor when talking about Ellen Parker - where does that come from ??
look forward to hearing from you again.

Hi - I am researching the same family. I have not got more information on William Grapel Cross past his marriage in 1862. I have his son William Bailey Cross on later censuses but I can't pin the family down for the 1871 cenus which woudl help to identify additional children ...

I have a Harriet Mercer Cross born 1875 to William Grapel's brother James.

Happy to provide further information about what I do know. However, I can't help on Ann Mercer Cross.

1853 would seem an early birth for William Grapel Cross given his marriage to Ellen Christina was 1862 - I wonder if it should be 1863 for the birth. The middle name is certainly one that William Grapel's family used.

I have just found a record for William Grappel Cross for 1864 on ancestry.com transcribed as England & Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791-1892 Record for William Grasspel Cross. He was tried on 9 February 1864 and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment for breaking and entering a warehouse and stealing therein. I think given the unusual middle name probably the right man.

Anne

For the record, William Grappel Cross died 28 March 1876 at 11 Wynne Street, Wavetree Road, Liverpool.
He is shown as William Cross in the GRO index but his death was reported in the Liverpool Mercury, 27 March 1876, as William Grappel Cross.
