Thank you. Sorry to waste your time, as I had found the couple in the same cencus, then searched marriages in England and come up with the Anne Watkins as the most likely candidate. ( I have a bible where she is entered as 'Anne Mercy P?.)
I have since found her. She was Baptised Annie Eliza Mercy Pohlman, born Richmond, Victoria 1873. She married Captain ( then) Frederick Owen Pike in Toorak in 1894. They were my Great granny and Grandad. Her father was a well known Melbourne Judge.
