It looks you are starting to research your family tree. Rather than provide you with the answers straightaway (where is the fun in that) the following websites will help you on your way.

If you haven't already open an account with familysearch.org. This is the Latter Day Saints family history site and is completely free. If someone is researching the same ancestry as you they may already have a tree uploaded to the site. Once you feel that you have exhausted the information from family search you may want to open an account with My Heritage or Ancestry ( or the myriads of other out there). Bear in mind that these sites are not free but should offer you a two week trial. Use these trials to work out which site is best for you.
If you feel you need to buy a certificate or printout to verify names, always buy the print out as there is normally more information and it is cheaper than a certificate. Check the information that will be provided on a printout. For example in NZ if you were married prior to 1880 parents names were not required on the certificate whereas after 1880 they were. If they were married after 1880 this means you won't need to buy a birth printout verify parents names. Deaths prior to 1875 required very little information whereas after 1875 they required spouses names and number and sex of surviving children if any. Also don't be disheartened by some of the dates you will find on the certificates, there was and probably still is, a lot of fudging of ages going on back then.
And last, but not least, don't assume information that is passed on to you via any forum or any family tree is correct. Always verify if you can and if you are not happy with an entry don't include it in your tree. If it is wrong you will spend a lot of time going off into the wild yonder and that is time you will never get back.
Happy hunting, or as my husband likes to say "happy grave-digging".
Thanks so much for the information i will check those sites out :) this post is actually on behalf of my foster family whose trees im also helping out with. Learning about my ancestors is definitely a passion and i now have several other family trees im helping out with. Once again thanks for the information/advice :)
