APPS family of Victoria Australia

Journal by ChrisC1

I am looking for a connection between two families thru marriage, the names being APPS, and either of the following ALVES, STAFFORD PUCKEY.
Time frame around 1800 and early 1900 the APPS family had funeral parlors in St Kilda, Brunswick, Fitzroy.

W. G. APPS was an undertaker in Fitzroy and St Kilda about this time but not sure if it's the same APPS family you seek.

Have not found a connection between APPS married to ALVES, STAFFORD or PUCKEY to date.

Do you have any further details to assist with record searches?

this is the family I am looking for. I am only going by what my mother used to refer to, she said we were related to them, but cannot find the connection. My mothers family lived around Essendon,Carlton,
Moonee Ponds. My maternal great grandmother born in 1853 was an Alves and married a Stafford and my maternal grandmother born in 1888 married a Puckey. My mother was born in 1918 in Moonee Ponds.Hope this helps.

The undertaker W.G. APPS may have been the William George APPS married to Mary Ann KILLICK in 1857 and they had twelve children born in Collingwood and Fitzroy Victoria.

William George APPS died 1918 in St Kilda, Victoria, aged 86 years. His parents were named as James Richard APPS and Sarah BLACKBURN.

Mary died 1910 in St Kilda, Victoria, aged 73 years. Her parents were named as Thomas KILLICK and Margaret COTTON.

I have been following the family lines of William and Mary APPS but have not found a connection between ALVES, STAFFORD or PUCKEY.

Can you can think of any other little details to assist with record searches?

Will let you know if I find any further.

I am unable to find or think of any other hints, but I am going to contact my cousins to see
if they can help any further.

Did John STAFFORD married to Mary ALVES have a brother named William STAFFORD?

by ChrisC1 on 2019-07-29 05:28:55

I will look further into it, but my only information from family trees is that he had 3 sisters Jane 1839-1879 died in Victoria, Matilda 1840-1904, Mary Ann 1833-1920. Parents Mary Kerr, Jarriett Stafford born in Ireland.

I am looking for marriage around late 1920 thru to 1950s

by tonkin on 2019-10-09 08:14:55

It would help if you included names and location of marriage to assist with record searches.
Cheers.

by ChrisC1 on 2019-10-10 08:04:26

I understand requesting further information regarding the above would help, but due to the family dynamics it is hard for me to do so. In saying so my grandmother married a Puckey originally in 1914, but was estranged from him from time to time and eventually separated I think from around 1937.
She often used other surnames ie Stafford{maiden name}, Hadley ,and on her death certificate her surname was Apps, her Christian names were Olive Marguerite. Family members talk of some connection to the Apps.
I am trying on Ancestry to find a connection thru family trees, BDMs in Victoria, and divorces but so far nothing is showing up.

The location would probably be in the area of Fitzroy,Carlton,Brunswick, Moonee Ponds in Victoria but not 100% sure.
Unfortunately that is all I can fill you in on.
Cheers.

Nothing recorded in the Victorian Marriage Records for Olive's marriage to APPS so the marriage must have taken place after 1950. Does her death certificate name her husband?

by tonkin on 2019-10-16 04:04:05

I expect this may be Olive's death.
Let me know if I'm wrong.

Name: Olive APPS.
Died: 1988 in Kew, Victoria.
Age: 95 years.
Father: Unknown.
Mother: Unknown.
Husband's name: Unknown.
Source: Registration of Deaths, Victoria.
Registration Number: 11381.

It appears the informant did not know Olive very well.
... Who was the informant?

Olive was buried in a lone grave at Andersons Creek Cemetery, Victoria, on the 29 February 1988.

Thanks Tonkin,
You are correct regarding, death date, place, and burial site, age is incorrect she was born in 1888 but that is what was on the death certificate,no other details were noted.
The gentleman at BDMs told me this is common for people who die in institutions not to have personal family details.
Her parents were John Stafford, Mary Ann Alves. I have no idea who the informant was.
I am hoping to find out more about her thru FOI and PROV .
